What Goes Into A Tom Bihn Backpack?
Description
The Techonaut 45 is made for travelers who pack a little extra but still want to carry on. Its roomy main compartment swallows days’ worth of clothes, while dedicated organization keeps the small stuff where you need it. Designed for comfort, even when packed to the brim — because running through terminals or catching late trains shouldn’t be a shoulder workout. Durable, reliable, and ready to go wherever your next long haul takes you.
- Three carry options let you wear it how you want. Backpack, duffel, or shoulder bag — with stowable shoulder straps and a cushioned grab handle that stay out of your way when you don’t need them.
- Breathable skeleton back panel with soft mesh adds comfort without trying too hard. Airflow where you want it, structure where you need it.
- Three quick-access pockets for having the necessities close at hand. Good for your phone, wallet, passport, keys, or a small water bottle.
- Main compartment opens wide, U-shaped style. Easy to pack, easy to find what you’ve packed, even when you’re on the move.
- Expandable end pocket with removable divider. Keeps shoes or laundry separate, or open it up for one big space with the internal zipper. Your call.
- Luggage passthrough slides over your rolling bag handle. Makes airports and train stations a little easier, one less thing to carry.
- Suspended laptop compartment with exterior access that fits 17” laptops or tablets.

Techonaut 45 Key Features
However You Haul, it Keeps Up
Backpack, duffel, or side carry — the Techonaut adapts to how you move, not the other way around. It’s built to handle the load of travel.
Pack More, Unpack Less
Wide opening U-shaped main compartment that lays everything bare — no rummaging for your last clean pair of socks. Clear access to your gear when you need it, whether that’s at a hostel bunk or an airport security line full of impatient strangers.
Your Laptop’s in Good Hands
Built-in protection without the bulk — the suspended laptop compartment keeps your laptop safely off the bottom, buffered from the bumps and thumps that come with travel.
No Digging, No Drama
Three quick-access pockets keep your passport, phone, headphones, or mid-flight snacks close at hand, no fumbling required. Because the moments between places are rarely graceful.
Room for the Unexpected
Dirty laundry? Pair of shoes? The end pocket expands when you need it, seemingly disappears when you don’t — because no trip ever goes exactly as planned, and that’s the point.

I am a new customer and am loving this bag so far, one week into a 5-week UK adventure. The fabric is impressive: strong, lightweight, and beautiful. The zippers move smoothly and easily, clearly a superior product. I love the layout of the bag. My collapsible hiking sticks fit inside and I have packed my daypack in as well. The packing cubes fit perfectly into the two compartments of the bag, keeping clothes organized and easily accessible. Fully packed my bag was 21.5 pounds. I decided to check it rather than carry it on the international flight, but I believe it would have met carry on standards with a bit of repacking.

The Techonaut 45 is an amazing bag. I had no problem fitting four days' worth of clothes in the main compartment and two pairs of shoes in the bottom compartment. The laptop pocket comfortably fit my 13.3 inch Macbook Air, and the side pocket comfortably fit my 40-ounce Hydroflask. Fully packed, the bag was easy to carry as a backpack (and I'm an objectively small person).

We came across the Tom Bihn brand on YT bag review videos. I can't emphasize enough how right the reviewers were in their adoration for this brand. I have never owned a bag of such quality in my life. This bag will last me for many, many years and feels indestructible.
The straps are extremely comfortable and do not dig into my arms or shoulders. The opening of the bag is where it excels - you can pack it like a suitcase, with the sides that sit up and don't collapse, and fit enough for a long or short trip. The laptop compartment is great - no need for a sleeve. There is a pocket inside the bag I use for my flip flops, and I like the bottom compartment for my shoes. I also use packing cubes that I tie down with the internal straps, leaving plenty of room on top. I customize what I carry with a variety of Tom Bihn accessories. I've also added a photo of the bag sitting comfortably at my feet under the seat on an AA flight.
I can't speak highly enough of this bag, only to add that now my husband and daughter own one as well!

I love bags, but it's rare that just thinking about one makes me light up. When I was searching for a good travel bag for multi-day solo trips, something that could double as a duffel when needed, I did a bunch of research. After making the rounds, I kept coming back to the Techonaut 45. Granted, I couldn't see it in person, but from what I could see from the images, videos and posts on the Tom Bihn forum, it seemed like the right balance of laptop storage (for a 16" laptop — which most bags I found can't accommodate), durability and storage.
When I unboxed it, I had a good feeling but I knew it wasn't until I could put it through the paces that I'd really know whether the leap I had taken was a good one. I packed it to the gills and flew to Portland for the weekend to meet up with a friend. From the moment I put it on my back, I knew I had made the right choice.
What astonished me whilst walking through the airport terminal was that for as heavy as the bag felt when lifting by one of the solid handles on the top or the side, when it was on my back it felt like half the weight was just...gone. The weight distribution and the padding on the straps is just right. It fit effortlessly into the overhead compartment on the plane, and once at the Airbnb, it was delightful to live out of — each item in its own pocket, clothes neatly packed in Tom Bihn travel cubes in the main compartment, even my bulky hiking boots neatly fit into the side compartment.
This bag is everything I…

This ends up being a bit of a comparison between the Techonaut 30 and 45, as I didn’t really know which would be the best replacement for my long-term travel duffel/ companion, which lasted over 10 years of high-frequency international travel. Why a comparison of the two? Well…I couldn’t decide which size would be best for my needs, so bought the 30 first…and then realised it was a little small for international (not domestic) travel, and uphold myself to the 45.
I wanted something that would stand up to planes, trains and automobiles for at least 10 years. I am not the biggest fan of cordura for backpacks, for various reasons relating to quality of manufacture (primarily failed stitching) or general waterproofness (delamination over time and a bag full of chaff). For both 30 and 45, the stitching is great, with tape-seamed stitching (presumably underneath the pieces are stitched too; see pic) and a bombproof feel and look. I am not at all worried at this point about bulge failure. On waterproofness and delamination…well, with these items I am only expecting the need for splash protection/ light rain, and the coating looks sound enough. I love the fact that the bags are almost totally lined, which does add a little extra protection to internal packing/ rubbing/ wear.
Size difference appears minor at first. Not much in the length; it’s mostly in the girth. There’s probably a joke in there somewhere…
There is a frankly bewildering array of pockets, to the point where I…
