I have really been trying to minimize my packing, and when my last suitcase started having some zipper and handle issues, I decided to go with a backpack. I heard a lot of good things about this brand and decided to give it a try. I kept fluctuating back-and-forth between getting the 30 L and the 45 L. I am an average weight 5‘3“, older, female, and I still like the idea of having a personal item in addition to a carry-on. Ultimately, I decided to go with the smaller size because I really don’t ever carry a laptop and I didn’t want to get stuck with a very heavy backpack. I am amazed at how much I can get in the technonaut 30. I basically just put two small shoes in the bottom portion and I’m able to get the medium size peak design packing cube along with a smaller size peak design packing cube in the middle and I have plenty of room to put in my toiletry case and a few other cases for tech, etc. It is also super light. I figured if I’m ever asked to check it, which I don’t think I will probably need to do, I can throw it in the Zpacks airline cover that I stash in there to protect it. I also decided to get the western flyer as my personal item, and I figure that should be more than enough for any travel I am planning. Plus, it looks like this is super solid and I won’t have to worry about tearing at the seams or zipper problems like I have on so many other pieces of luggage in the past.

I searched for months for a backpack I could use on a two-week trip to Scandinavia in the spring, where temperatures could vary dramatically. I narrowed my search down to 3 bags, including the one all the influencers rave about. Honestly, Tom Bihn wasn't even on my radar until I posted a question on Reddit about backpacks and people kept recommending the bags. But which bag? Tom Bihn makes 3 in this size. Ultimately, I went with the Techonaut. And when I compared to the two non-Tom Bihn bags, it wasn't even close. The Techonaut beat the others in comfort and packability (I found the other bags too organized, which limited what I could carry).
Being able to get onto airplanes, walk through airports, get on trains, navigate cobblestoned streets without hassle and in perfect comfort was such a gift. I rave about this bag to anyone who is willing to listen. It even fit under the seat on one budget European carrier (not RyanAir), though it wouldn't have passed the personal item dimensions.
I've used this bag on every trip since that Scandinavian holiday and I'm so excited every time I get to use it.
The only problem is now I want all things Tom Bihn. Is that actually a problem? LOL
Two contextual notes: I'm 5'4" with slight shoulders. I did purchase the hip belt which I did use when I had to wear the bag for longer stretches, and I'm glad I did.

I own over a dozen Tom Bihn bags, and this is my most recent, most expensive, and most uncomfortable bag to date. It pains me to write this because I had very high hopes for this bag. I purchased this bag to expand in size from the 20L Cambiata. Having used the Aeronaut 45 for many trips, I expected the straps of the Techonaut 30 to bring additional comfort over the Cambiata. The easily accessible large area of the Techonaut is excellent, and I really like the bottom pocket that holds my clothes when using the Techonaut 30 (Small) packing cube.
I travel internationally for work and on a recent trip I loaded the Techonaut 30 with an IBM ThinkPad, clothing, light weight shoes, two loaves of Ezekiel Bread, and fifty L'OR espresso capsules. The bag was full and stood up on its own (unfortunately I did not weigh it). As I walked through the Frankfurt airport with the Techonaut 30 on my back, and Daylight backpack in hand via the top handle, I realized that the shoulder straps were not comfortable. Each step I took was unusually problematic for a Tom Bihn bag. I thought about how comfortable the Aeronaut 45 always was, and I even thought that I might succumb to a roller bag in the near future. I was determined to test the Aeronaut 45 when I got to my destination since it had been equally loaded and sent as checked luggage. I spent $400 for a bag so I expect, for this price, to be perfect. It didn’t quite meet that standard and I regret buying it, but only a little ;-)
I needed an under seat bag to carry a week’s worth of clothes for a trip to Colorado. Did my stuff fit? Yes!
I needed my heavy 15” MacBook Pro to be very well secured and protected in my bag. Was it? Yes!
I needed the bag to be super comfortable and durable. Was it? Yes!
Now the downsides. The water bottle compartment sucked. For the life of me I can’t fathom why, for a $400(!!!) bag, you can’t have a compartment that expands to the outside instead of being rigid and forcing the bottle inward, eating up your internal space. Plus it is so tight that I had to go to 3 shops at the airport to find a water bottle tiny enough to fit.
Next, the bottom compartment. This is the part that makes me want to return the bag. The description states that you can either use the bottom compartment on its own (eg., for shoes) OR unzip it from the inside and use that extra space as internal storage. Not true!!! If you unzip this space from the inside, there is still this inexplicable part that you can only access if you use this as an external pocket. This means that there are a couple of inches of space that you could be using if unzipping the inside gave you access to the full pocket. But it doesn’t. You only get access to some of that space. This sucked, because I really could have shoved my stuff deeper down into my pack and used the extra…
