Four times the surface area of the Original Shepherd's Wool Utility Cloth!

Description

The Large Shepherd’s Wool Utility Cloth is a larger version of our Original Shepherd’s Wool Utility Cloth, and is simply lots more of a good thing.

Our original version of the Shepherd’s Wool Utility Cloth has been met with surprising enthusiasm, which has been very gratifying. Some folks loved it so much they wished for a larger size. And here we are.

So, liking as we do to make wishes come true when we can, we talked to the mill in Scotland and they explained that, because of the width of their looms (and therefore the width of the fabric), the next reasonable size up would need to be *twice* the size of the original. (They had been yielding two Shepherd’s Cloths across the width of the fabric: next step up is *one*.) That’s twice the width *and* twice the length, so the whole thing ends up being four times the surface area.

Which makes the large size Shepherd’s Cloth a lot more of a good thing and functionally very different from the original size. Worn around the neck as a kerchief, it becomes really more of a shawl; you can also fold it longways into fourths and wear it as a loose 52” x 13” / 132 x 33 cm scarf. As a travel blanket it will cover four times as much of the napper as will the original, more seriously placing it truly in the “blanket” category. Similarly, as a table cloth or picnic blanket, the large size covers four times the area, though we cannot guarantee you’ll have four times as much fun.

The Shepherd's Wool Utility Cloth hand washes easily and dries quickly; wash it in the hotel sink with a tiny bit of soap, hang it, and it'll be dry before you know it. Dry cleaning is fine too. Please don't machine wash -- and never machine dry -- your Shepherd's Wool Utility Cloth.

    Scratchy

I bought this for my trip to Italy. I gently washed it before I left and hung dry it. I used it on the plane to

keep warm and after about an hour I ended up opting for the free blanket the airline gives out because this wool tom bihn cloth was scratchy and uncomfortable. I like tom bihn products and I took a few of their clear organizer cubes with me and they were awesome. Sadly this wool cloth was a miss for me.

After taking it to the 2 week trip to Japan

I'm glad that I took it. It has been useful as a blanket on a cold night, a scarf during the cold rainy day, and a lap warmer on a cold evening while lounging. Very useful, lightweight, easy to care for and easy to wash/ dry.

That said, it's not a typical blanket. It's thin and large with rough surface. I would not sleep directly beneath it without some sort of a barrier + it will not hold any warmth by its own. Instead, its warmth comes from its ability to isolate the air - I tried it under a fully blasting ceiling fan and the strong current turned into a mere breeze. This thing was most useful when I placed it on the very top of my bedding, used it as a scarf, or as a throw over my down vest. If you're looking for extra piece of lightweight warmth-giving tool, I do suggest this.

    Goes everywhere!

Does it appear to be a square wool tablecloth at first glance? Yes. Has that mattered at all? No. I keep it in my travel bag. It's great on planes as a lap blanket, at beaches as a picnic blanket, as a shawl if it's chilly, as an extra layer in the slightly too cold hotel room. The great thing about wool is how durable it is. A sheep wore it first! It can handle a little mud and still cold wash and quick dry just fine. I wash mine with my very gentle shampoo and a little conditioner, like I do all my handknits and it just gets softer!

    Wool blanket

It has not been cold enough for me to use this yet but I am always cold and need a blanket, so I am excited to travel with this guy. He squeezes nicely into a size two stuff sack and fits in my S19 well.

    Not a Blanket

So many reviews mentioned its use as a travel blanket that I decided to try it - hard no for me. It’s an expensive tablecloth.
