Synapse vs. Synik: A Side-By-Side Comparison

You might’ve noticed the Synapse 25 recently appeared on HBO’s The Pitt, which helped introduce our brand to some new folks. Since then, we’ve gotten a lot of questions about which bag Dr. Robby was wearing to work — the Synapse or the Synik? That got us thinking: it’s about time for a refresh on the differences between the Synapse and the Synik–two very similar-looking, yet vastly different bags.

At first glance, the Synapse and the Synik look nearly identical. But beneath their multi-pocketed exteriors and turtle shell-like shapes lie several differences. How do these two bags compare, side-by-side, and which bag is right for you?

Synapse

First released in the early 2000s, the Synapse 19 quickly became a staple in our product line. Though initially designed for day hikes, it gained popularity as an everyday carry bag and ultralight minimalist travel backpack. We later introduced Synapse 25, which is slightly larger for those who want extra carry capacity.

Synik

The Synik 30 and Synik 22 were introduced into our lineup in 2019 after requests and suggestions on ways to enhance the design of the original Synapse. In 2024, the midsize Synik 26 was released for that perfect in-between size. Like the Synapse, the Synik is a catch-all backpack–travel, everyday use, or hitting the trail.

Choose the Synapse if:

Choose the Synik if:

  • You want more internal structure and support

  • You plan to pair it with rolling luggage while traveling

  • You want front and bottom gear attachments

  • You like a bag that transitions easily from trail to travel to everyday carry

  • You want something that feels a little more distinctive than the standard lineup

  • You’re drawn to unique material and color combinations

I’m Team Synik all the way. I’m 5’2" and I carry a Synik 30. It’s my farmers’ market bag, sports mom bag, and my one-bag travel backpack. I’m downsizing to one backpack in my life, instead of 3 (travel, EDC, hiking).

I was sold on the clam shell opening and multiple attachment points. I rarely carry a laptop so I removed the frame sheet to lighten the bag. I appreciate this feature.

I’ve had this bag stuffed very tightly on return trips, but the super chunky zippers held it together. The backpack fits under the seat of the airlines I’ve flown so far. Makes getting off the plane a lot easier. I’ve carried an Eagle Creek travel pack since 1996. But this 30L size has made my life simpler. I don’t pack as much. It has made riding public transportation, or going through the airports a lot easier.

I haven’t tried it as a hiking day pack yet, but I plan to sometime soon.

I’ve had my Synapse 19 since 2017 and could never live without it. Even though it’s considered small, it’s like a magic bag of holding because of the pocket arrangement. I’m still surprised with how much I can fit into it, with every item easily findable later. I’ve traveled to Europe, Asia, and South America with my Synapse and also used it as an everyday commuter bag. Quite simply, it’s perfect.

Love, love, love my Synik 26 Guide! Best backpack I’ve ever owned.

An important difference for me is back length. At 5’ 4”, I can wear a Synic 25 comfortably but a Synapse 25 is too long.

Which backpack(s) are best for use as underwear personal item on an average airplane?

TOM BIHN replied:
Hi Leish!

I’ll assume you meant “underseat”, and in that case, any of the Syniks or Synapses will work under most seats on most planes. Some planes have different types of seats, and the aisle, middle, and window seats are all a bit different underneath, but in general, they’ll all work well. =)
