New Color Alert! Meet Kelpie and Selkie 200D Halcyon

As summer comes to an end, we’re excited to introduce our two new 200D Halcyon colors!
This year, we wanted something versatile and transformative – shades that live in the “in-betweens.” They’re aquatic-inspired without leaning into the usual, expected blues.

Meet Selkie, a transformative blurple that isn’t shy about stealing the spotlight, and Kelpie, a vibrant teal gem that shimmers between blue and green. Like their namesakes from folklore, these colors are magnetic, mysterious, and ready to pull you in.

Kelpie and Selkie will be available to shop on Friday, August 15th at 10 am Pacific.

Meet Kelpie.

When we went hunting for a new halcyon, we had heard from you over and over what you wanted – TEAL. In that search, we wanted to find something that lived right in the middle of Seafoam and Sitka – not too blue, not too green, not too light, not too dark. The kind of in-between shade that feels perpetually in motion. When the first fabric samples arrived, at least three people in the factory blurted out “Kelpie!” at the exact same time… and thus Kelpie 200d Halcyon was born.

If you’re not up on Scottish folklore, a kelpie is a mythical water spirit, often taking the form of a horse, said to haunt shimmering lochs and rushing rivers. This teal evokes that same shifting, aquatic magic – like the calm surface of a hidden, shimmering lagoon, the deep glint of a kingfisher’s feathers, or sunlight catching on a salty ocean wave.

Compared to Seafoam, Kelpie feels a little moodier and more grown-up. Compared to Sitka, it’s brighter and a touch more playful. It’s a true teal that sits right on the line between blue and green and we think it wears that balance beautifully.

Meet Selkie.

When we went searching for our second Halcyon color, Maia (our marketing manager) was drawn to a very specific swatch – the Santa Cruz colorway of our Organic Cotton Truck. That purple-with-a-hint-of-electric-blue was inspired by the TOM BIHN logo t-shirts and sweatshirts of the '80s and early '90s, back when the company was just Tom himself in Santa Cruz, California.

Selecting this shade was no easy task, as we wanted something that could truly be described as BLURPLE. We’ve had plenty of blues and a few purples in the past, but we wanted something that could cross into both worlds. This swatch delivered on that.

When it came to naming, we followed the path set by Kelpie and landed on Selkie. Like Kelpie, Selkie is a creature of Scottish and Irish folklore, often depicted as a water spirit that can shed its seal skin to become human. It’s a fitting name for a color with such a transformative nature.

Selkie is striking, vibrant and almost electric. It evokes the image of a blooming cornflower, mountain lupines waving in the breeze, or an aurora borealis illuminating the deep night sky. It’s neither blue nor purple. It’s both and it’s stolen our hearts.

Our team has been working hard behind the scenes hand-picking these colors. Whether you gravitate towards the shapeshifting electricity of Selkie or are soothed by the serene, aquatic tones of Kelpie, our new Halcyon colors are ready to meet you where you are–bringing color, character and a touch of mystery to whatever adventures lie ahead.

As usual, Selkie and Kelpie will slowly be integrated as liners into our bags, but will be available to shop in the following accessories this Friday:

Selkie and Kelpie are available on Friday, August 15, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific.
