Our 50% Recycled Nylon Ghost Whale Organizer Pouches are the same as our original Ghost Whale Organizer Pouches and Color Zipper Ghost Whale Organizer Pouches… except they're made out of our new 630d 50% pre-consumer recycled nylon fabric. (There's other items available in our 630d as well: Travel Cubelet, HLT Pouch, P.I.K.A. Pouch.)
Our 630 denier nylon fabric is woven of 50% pre-consumer recycled nylon; both the recycled and non-recycled fiber is sourced in South Korea, and the fabric itself is woven, dyed and treated there in a bluesign® mill.
When the opportunity presented itself to utilize a 50% pre-consumer recycled nylon, we jumped on it: we received swatches, Taber (abrasion) tested them, performed various other tests, made sample bags, and were quite pleased with the results.
Previously, the only recycled fabrics out there have been recycled polyester. It’s not like we have something against polyester (PET) per se: it’s a very useful plastic for many applications, and its recyclability is great -- endlessly turning pop bottles into fleece pullovers and back again is pretty cool. However, polyester’s performance as a bag/backpack fabric is notably subpar when compared to nylon.
The texture of the 630d has a slightly more coarse appearance, reminiscent of 1000d Cordura. Its hand (or stiffness) is somewhere between 420 Parapack and the 525 2x2; at 7.8 oz per square yard / 265 grams per square meter, it’s just a bit heavier than 420 Parapack.
All of our Ghost Whale Organizer Pouches (630d 50% Recycled, Original, and Color Zipper) feature a curved L-shaped opening with a #3 YKK Coil zipper. This allows you to zip the pouch open / access contents on just the narrowest side or zip it fully open, almost clamshell style (but not fully clamshell, lest your stuff tumble out of the pouch).
The name? Tom thinks the shape of the pouch resembles that of a whale (Melville is on his Audible wishlist.) Nik thinks the pattern for the pouch is shaped like a ghost. There you have it: Ghost Whale.
Fits really small items. Airpods, business cards, essential oils, lip balm, mini first-aid kit, etc.
Fits small items. Think along the lines of a mini notebook and pen.
Fits slightly larger small items and is especially useful for carrying pens/pencils/markers, reusable utensils, cords and cables.
You guessed it: designed to fit an A5 notebook with room for pens/pencils/markers.

Defects in materials or workmanship are uncommon and are most often evident while your bag is still new. Keep in mind that daypacks and briefcases are often subject to serious wear in everyday use. We often see TOM BIHN bags that are still solid and in use after five, ten, fifteen, even twenty or twenty-five years, with minor repairs needed here or there. But remember: only true love lasts forever.
