Description

LIMITED DESIGN LAB EDITION: click here to jump to what's new in this Design Lab version of the Packing Cube Shoulder Bag.

The Packing Cube Shoulder Bag is a dual-purpose packing cube: in preparation for and during your journey, use it to organize and pack your clothing inside the AeronautTri-Star, or Western Flyer — just like how you'd use our Packing Cubes. When you reach your destination and it's time to leave your main travel bag in the hotel or hostel, repack the Packing Cube Shoulder Bag with a light jacket, wallet, phone, small water bottle, map, and add a shoulder strap: you're ready to go out and explore, and you've saved space by not having to bring a separate bag for day use.

Most folks who use our bags have at least one shoulder strap made by us, and thus we don't include a shoulder strap with the Packing Cube Shoulder Bag. If you would like a second shoulder strap for the Packing Cube Shoulder Bag, or simply a lighter shoulder strap, choose the optional 1" Shoulder Strap.

What’s new in this limited edition Design Lab Packing Cube Shoulder Bag:

Original Shoulder Strap Attachment Design
This edition of the Packing Cube Shoulder Bag features the original placement of the shoulder strap attachment points. That is to say, the shoulder strap attachment points are back on the narrow left and right ends of the bag, at the ends of the main zipper, rather than on the opposing front and back top corners.

#8 Water Resistant Racquet Coil YKK zipper
This zipper offers a bit more weather and abrasion resistance than the previous coil zipper.

Handy Pulls
We’ve snipped the metal zipper pulls off and replaced them with cord pulls so you don’t have to. Don't like 'em? Want to add some colorful Cord Pulls of your own? Just unknot the cord pulls (but put them somewhere safe, you might want to use them later!)

Design Lab Label

The Design Lab edition label is rectangular and slightly smaller than our original label. It has a black background with dark grey text in the foreground; the text is TOM BIHN followed by Design Lab. Next to Design Lab, there are three dots — the therefore sign.

Think of bags with the Design Lab label as our experimental side projects — sometimes they’ll be bags we just wanted to make for our own use (Nik designed the Shadow Guide largely for himself) and sometimes they’ll be variations of designs you've requested. Design Lab bags might be made out of limited edition or small batch fabrics or materials; they might be totally utilitarian or akin to a bag-version of some head-scratching experimental jazz.

Regardless of any of that, Design Lab offerings may or may not become regular offerings, and depending on the quantity we’re able to make, they may or may not sell out quickly. We're not trying to be coy; it's simply that we need to focus our production capacity on what people are most interested in.

A (possible) new material: Cerylon 6,6 210d

Cerylon (in Cobalt Blue) is a potentially new 100% nylon 6,6 fabric 210d fabric. Per our request, the mill made Cerylon with twisted yarns just like our heavier weight fabrics — twisted yarns increase the density of a fabric and help to hide cosmetic abrasion. Cerylon has a formidable tear strength (though it’s not quite as high as Halcyon) that is more than adequate for its intended use as a fabric for lightweight accessories (like this Packing Cube Shoulder Bag) or as a lining material. It has a “double wall” ripstop pattern, which we’ve added mostly as an aesthetic nod to its near-kin Halcyon.

After Cerylon prevailed through our typical and rigorous fabric tests, we ordered a small sample yardage of this material from our mill to make additional sample bags for more folks to use in real-world situations. Usually, we make those sample bags for the crew here at TOM BIHN, friends, family — whoever expresses and interest and happens to be around when these projects manifest into reality. At this point in the process, we’ve already tested the integrity of the fabric: the intention behind getting more sample bags out into the world is to gather more subjective experience around the experience of the fabric itself — the hand of the fabric, its aesthetic implications, in what designs it’ll shine, and so on.

This time, thanks to our Design Lab series, we’ve decided to use the sample yardage of Cerylon to make bags for *you*. We’re pretty crazy about Cerylon after using it ourselves, but we haven’t yet decided whether we’ll place a full order for it. This may be the one and only chance to order a bag in Cerylon.

Shoulder Bag Heaven!

I haven't gotten to try the Packing Cube Shoulder Bag (PCSB) out as a packing cube yet, but I have found a great use for it. During my day I feel like I often don't really need a bag, and I don't always bring my Sidekick or Side Effect along. I have a wallet/pouch that attaches to my wheelchair to hold my phone & wallet essentials. I usually keep my keys in a pocket on my body. And most "personal items" (hygiene and med supplies) go in a hidden bag under my wheelchair. However, lately I've been noticing that I do need a bag - for my spare mask, my gloves, my sunglasses case, keys if I don't have a coat on, if my chair is going to be out of eyesight I like to take the wallet/pouch off...and on and on. All of this usually ends up piled on the passenger seat, but if I have a passenger (or if I'm the passenger) then it needs a place to go! Enter the PCSB. It's the perfect size, and size it's so lightweight and foldable (in halcyon), so I don't feel weighted down with one more item. I also think that it will be easy to hang on the back of my chair (when in safe environments not prone to purse snatching - like home & work) using two handle loops, easy to pop on/off, since I don't like to have a bag permanently there. Need to remember to order those next time! I realize this is a highly specialize review, but perhaps other wheelchair users might be interested.

Multipurpose and light

I picked up one of these packing cube in black recently and I like it a lot, great purchase. It’s very light and thin and packable but made from a tough fabric so feels sturdy. I love that I can use it to organize my clothes en route on a trip then use it on an outing to put a light jacket, wallet, guidebook etc. in it, means I can pack lighter and schlep less things with me on a trip.

My favorite shoulder bag of TOM BIHN!

Perfect size. With an absolutely shoulder straps make it so comfortable even full load. Very fit my edc. There have two things I think it can develop. First is the zip of out side pocket better use two head zip. when I take the bag on shoulder it's too far to reach it. the second is better have more O ring(at least two) in the out side pocket. it will be very useful!!!

But it's already a wonderful bag which I love so much.

Packing cube and travel purse + challenge

I waited to write a review. I got the bag for an Ireland/Italy trip. I loved the flexibility of it being a packing cube, and me being able to empty the contents, and use it as a day bag. From the Vatican to Belfast, the bag was a champ! I was going to write after our return from Europe, when I decided to use the bag as a catch all for small items in my old, used Synic 30. Then, the great challenge happened - my sunscreen tube leaked...

I set my bag out side, and blotted the warm fabric as much as possible. I then soaked the bag in mild dish soap. Minor grease stains remained.....

So, with nothing to lose, I sprayed stain release liquid, and washed the bag carefully.

Results - I can happily report that the bag looks new, and is ready for more adventure! No need to worry about the reinforced seams, and my lovely bag is perfect, again.

Thank you, Tom Bihn employees, for making such wonderful products.

It's a good lookin bag

I have this bag in Viridian and it is so gorgeous to me. I just love looking at it, the color is so delightful in person. The diagonal zipper design on the front is so unique and gives it such personality. There is something about the way the straps attach on the front and back that makes this bag fall very well from the shoulder.

It makes a nice everyday bag but it has the added functionality of performing as a packing cube. There is not any internal organization, however, so you need to provide your own. It is good to have other pouches or smaller bags for organization so you don't have to dig around a lot. This is fine to me because it allows me to customize to my own needs, rather than having pockets I don't tend to use. My one complaint about this bag is there is nothing to hold onto for leverage when zipping open. Typically on a shoulder bag you could hold onto the strap as it is usually on the end. On this , I end up awkwardly pinching the side of the bag. This may not be a problem for other people though.
