Description

The perfectly sized tote for every day carry. Designed with knitters and other crafty types in mind.

The Little Swift is a smaller version of our Swift tote bag. Originally designed for knitters and crafty types, The Swift was designed by Tom in collaboration with the readers of Knitty® magazine. Since its debut, the Swift has become popular among knitters and non-knitters alike seeking a uniquely styled tote/shoulder bag. Tom noticed that many of the women who work at TOM BIHN and carry Swifts didn't always need a bag as large as the Swift. On some days, a smaller version would work better. And the Little Swift was born.

The Swift Story:

In 2005, we held a contest with Knitty® magazine and asked their readers to tell us everything they would like to see in the ultimate knitting bag — from colors, materials, and style of bag to functionality, accessories, and size. We received a flood of entries and suggestions. Tom made a few prototypes and sent them off to the editors of Knitty® for review; they responded with their ideas and thoughts. And, when the final design was ready for debut, the editors of Knitty® held a naming party. Many great names were suggested, but the winning entry was chosen because it has significance to knitters but doesn't designate the bag as solely for knitting: it's a great bag for all kinds of crafts, and many folks will find its clear pockets and stuff sack useful features in an everyday bag. Special thanks go to Amy and all the editors and readers of Knitty® magazine: we (really) couldn't have done it without you.

The Little Swift is available in multiple colors and fabrics, although the features, layout, and size remain the same in all versions.

Inside the Little Swift are two clear urethane pockets. The pockets mirror each other, and they close with strong #8 YKK zippers. Above one of these pockets you'll find an O-ring with a key snap attached. On each end of the bag's interior is another O-ring. The O-rings are designed to allow you to clip the included Small Yarn Stuff Sack (in a color and fabric matching the interior of the bag) to the left or right side of the bag. And, of course, you can clip additional Yarn Stuff Sacks to the O-rings.

The included Small Yarn Stuff Sack is made with the same fabric that backs the clear urethane pockets of the Little Swift. This Yarn Stuff Sack can accommodate a medium or small ball of yarn. It has a drawstring top, and it includes a feature knitters will immediately notice as indispensable: a triangular clip open/close grommet to feed yarn through.

The remaining interior of the Little Swift is devoted to space for your stuff. For custom organization, add Clear Organizer PouchesKnitting Tool Pouches, a Travel Tray or Pen/Tool Wrap. The Little Swift's tote-bag design allows its contents to be easily found: you'll never have to waste time searching inside deep caverns for small, lost items. A button closure secures the top of the bag, which, unlike a zipper, won't fray yarn or projects. The handles are the ideal length for carrying in hand or on the shoulder, with the highest quality PORON® foam padding them.

Could this be the perfect tote? (Shh, don't tell the Swift!)

I recently used my large Swift as a giant tote bag for a conference, and it was perfect. Cavernous and effective for hauling groceries and sweaters and shoes and such. So when the opportunity arose to try out my new Little Swift, I was excited to try it. I fit a Side Effect, a medium clear-bottomed yarn sack, a water bottle, sunglasses, and some snacks for an afternoon at Grandma and Grandpa's house with the kids, and it. was. perfect. Not so big that things got lost, but not so small that items had to be squished or omitted. For everyday kinds of things, it's really a delightful little tote. It's definitely more on the 'purse-like-object' side of size, but sometimes you just want something that's not massive to haul a few handy extra things.

Great little bag, for projects or as a handbag

This bag is thoughtfully designed as a project bag. I like that it opens really wide, stands up on its own, and the handles are just the right length. I don't really care for the plasticky material on the inside pockets, but the visibility is a bonus, so I guess that's the tradeoff. It would also make for a highly functional handbag, although I haven't used it that way quite yet. It is not big enough for my straight needles, they stick out the top, so go for the regular sized one if that's how you'd use it.

As for the little yarn pouch, it works fine. Just the right size for the cakes that come off my ball winder. I don't use the little clip for threading the yarn, but it was handy to have the pouch to contain the yarn and keep it clean while knitting on recent car and plane trips.

    Yarn bag

So far I’ve knit one project while I’ve had this bag. I want to love it, but it needs a few small adjustments to be the perfect bag.

The yarn stuff sack is probably the most problematic. I’m knitting with a lace weight yarn and if I thread my yarn through the hook inside the bag, my yarn pulls in a way that it gets stuck in the joint on the hook on the outside of the bag. So I just don’t thread my yarn through the hook inside the stuff sack and try to make sure that my yarn pulls through the top and away from that outside hook.

I also wish there was a sleeve on the outside of the swift. And I’d like to see one pen/pencil slot in the bag.

The only other issue is the bag straps. They are very thick. Thicker than is comfortable for my small hands. Yarn is not heavy and I’m not toting around pounds of yarn to really make these thick straps necessary.

With a few small adjustments, it could be the perfect bag!! The quality is AMAZING and the bag should last forever. Plus I love the colors. I’ll use it for many years.
