I love the retro look and the organization features of this briefcase. I don’t always use the padded section for a laptop but it also works for papers or a slim notebook. I don’t know if the current version includes it, but I got the optional zip pocket that fits between the two “halves”. It’s nice for carrying additional smaller items or any personal items you don’t want displayed and can be removed if desired.

This is exactly what I have been looking for. Has enough pockets and straps for all my kit, plus a pocket for the laptop. It opens flat, which is fantastic, but it is also flexible enough to act as a tote when you just unzip the top. The most versatile shoulder bag I've ever owned. Well worth the expense.
