Our Packing Cubes are designed to help you most efficiently utilize the space inside your travel bag and keep your clothes neat and organized.
Tom designs all of our bags with enough built-in organization to serve most folks well. With its three equally-sized compartments and external zippered pockets, the Tri-Star travel bag enables you to pack up your clothing and tech in a variety of ways. Adding a few optional Packing Cubes allows you to further customize your bag's storage capabilities, most efficiently utilize the space inside its compartments, and keep your clothes neat and organized.
Packing Cubes are great for holding rolled or folded clothes or an extra pair of shoes. They're especially useful for the front and back main compartments of the Tri-Star, both of which can unzip completely to clamshell open. (Note: the Tri-Star's front compartment features a zippered divider that's sized for Small and Medium Packing Cubes, keeping them in their respective places.
Sample Packing Strategies:
#1 “Just a couple of Packing Cubes”
One Medium Packing Cube (t-shirts, folded pants or skirts) and one Small Packing Cube (underwear, socks). Use the tie-down straps to secure folded slacks/skirts/shirts/jacket.
#2 “Totally Organized”
One Small and one Medium Packing Cube in the front main compartment; one Large Packing Cube in the back compartment. You can put another Small and Medium Packing Cube or one Large Packing Cube in the middle compartment, or use that compartment to carry your laptop in a Cache. Use a 3D Clear Organizer Cube (attached via a 16” Key Strap) as a 3-1-1 liquids/toiletries bag.
Of course, we offer various sizes of Packing Cubes that allow you to come up with your own packing strategy. Since all three of the main compartments of the Tri-Star are of equal size, any of the three main compartments can either fit one Large Packing Cube or the Tri-Star Packing Cube Backpack or one Small and one Medium Packing Cube.
Using a combination of Packing Cubes and a Packing Cube Backpack gives you the ability to keep your stuff organized in transit and also have a smaller, lightweight bag to use at your destination. Our high-quality U.S.-made Mesh fabric offers two main benefits: first off, it allows you to see what’s inside the Packing Cube, but doesn’t make the contents so visible that the person behind you in line at the TSA checkpoint will know if you prefer boxers or briefs. Secondly, by its very nature (being mesh and all), it is a fabric that is mostly about its lack of fabric—it’s very light in weight.
Aether is an ultra-light, 100% nylon fabric from Japan. It has a unique and complex construction, combining 30 denier monofilament (warp and weft) with both 100 denier and 200 denier yarns in a micro-ripstop weave to further increase its tear strength. Aether is very light in weight yet provides an almost paper-like structure that we find helps to add some body to our Packing Cubes—which, in turn, makes them easier to pack.
Sewn in Seattle
Our bags are designed and sewn right here in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.
That allows us to be control freaks in the best way possible; we have direct control and oversight of the quality of our materials, our products, and the jobs and working environment that we help create. It also offers us a unique spontaneity: when we have an idea for a new product or accessory, we can design it, figure out how to build it, add it to our website and be ready to ship it out our front door all within just a few weeks. How cool is that?

You can expect a TOM BIHN product to give years and years of hard service.

5 stars for the product, 0 stars for the restrictions on colors/fabrics.
Given your diversity of fabrics and products, the apparent continuing use of batch production makes little sense in the modern world. It's worse than unhelpful. The "here's what color we're making this week, or what colors we're not gonna make at all" approach should have switched to make-to-order/just-in-time years ago. The product line cries out for a flexible, customer-responsive production system, not batching guess-work. A product strategy of high quality, diverse products and materials, and substantial prices does not mesh well with batching. Likely to over-produce, or miss sales, or irritate customers.
FOR EXAMPLE: I love my Tri-Star bag and cubes, but how can you not support one of your most expensive and long-term bags with the standard replacement accessories it came with? It's like buying an Chevy Corvette, expensive and in production for decades, with a gray interior, trying to buy new floor mats 4 years later, and being told "no" by Chevrolet:
"Really, no gray mats? That's what the car had."
"Nope, they're 'retired'. We still make mats, and we still have the gray, but not for mats. How about some bright blue instead, or more mesh? How about a nice Hawaiian punch?"
Due in part to travel losses, I wanted a couple of medium Tri-Star packing cubes made of steel halcyon fabric with a mesh top, and some small steel halcyon cubes. I don’t want two sides of mesh. I don’t want…TBTOM BIHN2 months ago

I have packing cubes already so I thought twice before buying these. Still, I wanted them to fit my tri star and that’s exactly what they do! Such wonderful, packing cubes and so perfect for their use. They really fit the tri star better than any ordinary, packing cube would.

(Yes, it’s a first-world problem.)
I hate when my bags lose structure so this will help me keep my (bag) sanity.

It worked well to organize my bag. Could use it on the side or even in the middle compartment. Wondered if it could be deeper- would it still fit in the bag?
