Is One Enough? Are Six Too Many?

So, I’m not sure how this started . . . it was a dark and stormy night and I realized with horror that my old, peely handled, unimaginative travel tote was deceased. I mean I loved that thing for years but when it started to go, it went. And that’s how I came to be searching for under seat/carry on options. Lo and Behold, up popped Tom Bihn. And I got it into my head that I might try . . . NO! That I really NEEDED a backpack. I proceeded to then spend more time with Tom Bihn than I had spent in my last three relationships. I tried to decide how many liters I needed? What color combos were the very, very best? Why is everyone so in love with Halcyon? I looked at all the travel bags, all the totes, everything! Then one night, after hours spent trying to decide I thought, “I haven’t carried a backpack since college. I need a tote.” And in that moment, I chose the Nomad 16 tote in black ballistic lined in Wisteria Halcyon, a matching Wisteria Handy Little Thing and travel tray. It all came in three days. A day ahead of schedule! I opened it. Well, the Nomad seemed a bit more narrow width-wise than I had envisioned. And what about my backpack dream? Had I done the right thing? I started to put some items inside. Wait there’s more room. Put in some more. Clip that HLT into an O-ring. You know if I ordered the packing cube/cross body I think it would fit in there too. And maybe a mystery pouch. Maybe two mystery pouches and what about more carabiners? Is one enough? Are six too…

It's everything I expected and then some.

Wonderful design. Impeccable workmanship. Excellent materials. An upright place in the front pocket for my water bottle and thermos. A pocket inside the padded main compartment for my 13.5" laptop. Room in the main compartment for my bike helmet and shoes. I can slide the Nomad over the handle of my hard-sided carry-on. I can carry it comfortably over one shoulder when my carry-on is a backpack. And I can use the shoulder strap to carry it on my bike. On top of all of that, it is strikingly good-looking. My photos or Tom Bihn's photos for that matter don't do it justice.

    Exceeded Expectations!

This is my first Tom Bihn bag, and it did not disappoint! I agonized over which Nomad bag to purchase, worried about it being too big or too small. My goal was to have a bag I could use for both work and activities, rather than switching between a work backpack and casual tote. I’m glad I went with the Nomad 16.

The craftsmanship of the bag is amazing, and I love the layout. The front compartment allows for organization without adding bulk, and I think it will help me to avoid things getting lost in a bottomless pit, something I’ve struggled with in the past. Thank you for an amazing bag!

Why can't I give it six stars

I love it so much. It carries nicely on my shoulder, the zippers are satisfyingly sturdy, I can put a water bottle in an interior pocket and it won't fall over, it's the perfect size for a work/laptop bag, and it is beautiful in Aubergine! Maybe my favorite TB I've ever bought.

Great design but not a perfect fit for me

As someone who habitually carries too much stuff with them and was tired of the “Why do you have that big backpack?” questions, I had been eyeing two different TB bags as a replacement – the Nomad 16 or the Maker’s Bag. My current bag is a TB Paragon backpack purchased in early 2023 (20 liter capacity). I was looking for a crossbody bag that would feel a little less awkward than carrying a backpack with me everywhere.

Although the Nomad 16 is a well-designed bag, I ended up returning it and buying the Maker’s Bag instead. (And I’m probably still going to use my Paragon for everyday use because I have accepted that I am just the kind of person who likes to be prepared for anything.) The Nomad 16 just ended up being not quite the right bag for me, so I thought I’d share pros and cons from the perspective of someone who wanted to use it as an everyday bag.

    Nomad 16 Pros:

Zipper closure – one of the main draws for me was the fact that all of the pockets and the main compartment zip closed, both for security and to prevent anything from falling out or anything from getting in (when storing this bag in a desk drawer in an office with occasional pest issues).

Tote bag handles – the handles are similar in length to my TB Pop Tote, and are long enough to carry it easily from one shoulder, even when wearing layers.

Laptop pocket – the interior back pocket is great for slipping a laptop or notebook inside the bag.

Padded interior – there’s padding on both sides of the main…
