Full Description
A Rework of our Much-Loved Nik's Minimalist Wallet
The Rework Process
Our goal was to improve the failure point we had identified on our wallets. We kept seeing wallets come in for the same kind of repair, elastic replacement.
The answer to our problem seemed simple: Replace the elastic with a different one.
Our designer Jose began by making and testing samples with a more robust elastic, unfortunately the added bulk of the new elastic made it difficult to sew and the new stretch made the wallets bunch and deform, also it didn’t solve the issue of the elastic wearing out.
He wanted to find a way to close our wallets that didn’t utilize an element that would wear out and would need to be replaced eventually; This ruled out elastics and hook and loop closures.
He found some magnets that we had used on past products (the P.I.K.A. Pouch, in particular) and decided to give them a try in a sample. After some patternmaking and sewing, we had a sample with a new closure system, the new sample retained the “minimal” nature of the original wallet and improved its function.
The minimal aspect of our wallets was also important, and we wanted to keep the new version as close to the original as possible. The new closure system is a great improvement, and we have been pleased with how it’s performed.
The team has been testing the new version since last year, overall, the feedback has been great, and we are excited to reintroduce wallets into our product assortment.
The Size and Shape of Things
The new Minimalist Wallet is exactly the same size and shape as the old Nik's Minimalist Wallet #1.
It has two interior pockets, one on each side, and no exterior pockets. In lieu of the elastic band it has two magnets to close the wallet.

I really like this wallet and have been carrying it for a couple of weeks. It took me some time to decide on how to carry cash in it, but I've got it now. Cards feel secure, and did I mention it's small?
I understand the build quality issues as the lining on the interior is an unfinished flap, but it doesn't effect functionality. It's in my pocket now.

I have been searching for a small wallet to carry 6-8 cards and maybe a little cash and nothing else. This wallet is it! It is so small and fits my cards and a few bills perfectly. The fabric is not only beautiful but feels silky smooth to the touch. I think the designers made this just for me!

Well made, durable, nice hand-feel, fits a solid amoujt of cards (and magnets will trap folded cash when closed). Only ding against this is the placement of the magnets (middle of each side), just seems flimsy vs along an edge. Either way, this has become a new favorite, easy wallet to use daily.

Unlike earlier reviewers, my wallet didn't have any sewing errors. Magnetic works well. 4/5 because of personal preference, for the earlier version with the outside pocket. I use the outside pocket for folded cash. i bought this forgetting to check for that detail.

- Patrick A.Verified BuyerBought For Myself1 week agoBought For MyselfRated 2 out of 5 starsCraftsmanship is subpar for the price.
I have been waiting for them to restock their wallets for a long time. Immediately ordered when I saw this was available. To say I was disappointed when I pulled it out of the package is an understatement. The craftsmanship is just not there for $50. Loose threads around the magnets, bottom of lining in the pockets isn't stitched so debris can go under it, pooching of lining material out one side of the wallet. It appears this took maybe 10 minutes to put together. Considering you can purchase an entire sidekick for $32 more makes this feel like a complete rip off. It is very light but for the price the stitching should be immaculate and this is anything but. Do better Tom Bihn.
