October Restocks and What’s Coming

TOM BIHN Field Journal Notebook FJN

First up, many of you have seen it already...the Yeoman Duffel and Brain Bag are back in stock! We made an effort to make a lot of bags this time around. These may be the final restocks for these bags in 2022 (depends on schedule, but our hands are quite full at the moment!).

You know that feeling when you’re working on lots of cool stuff but you can’t quite divulge all of it yet? Well, that’s how we are feeling at the factory. Below is a preview of what you can expect to see in the coming weeks.

Field Journal Notebook
Yes, you read that right! Previously retired in 2018, we are bringing back the FJN for a limited run. The FJN is a compact, portable, weatherproof, zippered notebook that can be worn as a shoulder bag for note-taking, journaling, or sketching.

Back in 2018, we said goodbye to the FJN for two primary reasons:

  1. The FJN’s three-ring binder mechanism is no longer available
  2. The cost of the specially-produced-just-for-us FJN paper inserts/refills have gone up by a substantial amount that we’d rather not pass on to you

So what changed? Well, earlier this summer while doing a bit of deep cleaning in the storage sections of our factory, we actually found a stash of the special three-ring binders! It felt fortuitous, since we've been getting messages and emails in the past year asking us to bring the FJN out of retirement.

In terms of the paper inserts/refills, we still don't have any of the specially-produced-just-for-us versions on hand, but we figured there are plenty of other businesses out there than can provide 5.5 x 8.5”  paper of your preference (see here and here for our past recommendations).

Swift
We're offering everyone's favorite project bag for the second time this year. The Swift was designed for knitters by knitters. But even if you're not the crafty type, it's a great tote bag with fun colors for work, travel, and everything in between.

Please note that at this time, we are not making the Little Swift, Tool/Pen Wrap, and Knitting Tool Pouches.

Travel Laundry Stuff Sack, Mesh
Customers asked if we can make a version of the Travel Laundry Stuff Sack with mesh on one side to allow worn clothing to breathe. That made sense to us, so here you go!

Packing Cubes in Graphite Piscine
We're transitioning our packing cubes to Graphite Piscine! If you own a Techonaut or Cambiata, you will recognize that this is the lining fabric that we use for the laptop compartment. Lightweight and smooth, we're loving the look and feel of this fabric. Expect to see the Techonaut/Aeronaut 45 and Tri-Star packing cubes in Graphite Piscine first. But eventually, you will see Graphite Piscine roll out for all packing cubes.

If you're curious why we're transitioning from Aether to Piscine, please see this blog post for a more detailed explanation.

As always, once things are listed as 'in production' on our site, we recommend signing up for restock alerts if you're interested. If you believe you're not receiving the restock emails that you've signed up for, please emailus@tombihn.com and we can try to help you figure out what is going on!

Any questions? Feel free to drop them below.

I love the idea of the Field Journal – right up my street. But the big show stopper is the 3 ring mechanism and non standard size paper – pretty much impossible to get hold of in London UK. Rather than re-issue old design, why not bring it right up to date with a ‘version 2’ design – which allows different ring mechanisms to be inserted, maybe? In the UK and across Europe, A5 6 ring mechanism would be perfect! If you ever plan on coming up with updated design for Field Journal 2, then please put me at the very top of your customer list!

I have two of these wonderful field journals. I did finally remove the 3 ring portion (it slips right out) and placed my own journal inside (I am currently using scribbles that matter for its lovely heavyweight paper. The lovely cover helps keep my journaling tools organized. I just love mine. Any chance on updating the interior like I did? It would eliminate both of your stated availability issues and brings the notebook up to date with how people fireld journal

Hi Barbara! Great to hear you’ve been able to enjoy your Field Journal Notebooks! Right now, we’re just planning for the FJN to be a limited release. We’ve been able to offer many of our retired bags as pre-orders or in small batches, however, so it’s always possible we could see another return in the future. :)

Seems like the email notification button is not working.
Also is the pen bag insert included?

TOM BIHN replied:
Hi Kevin! Sorry about that! You can shoot us an email at emailus@tombihn.com and we can help get you signed up. :) As for the inserts, those are separate, but we are just doing the Field Journal Notebook this time around. The Field Journal Notebook itself does have some built in pen/tool slots though.

Jessica - October 26, 2022

What color combos will the Swift come in?

TOM BIHN replied:
Hi Jessica, you can find all the color combos that will be offered listed as in production on the product page.

Karen - October 27, 2022

For the Field Journal are you going to be able to produce and sell the FJ inserts (pocket and pen/pencil) along with the field journals?

Plum looks gorgeous and I love the red blend cordura.

TOM BIHN replied:
Hi Karen! We’ll just be having the Field Journal Notebook itself this time, no plans for the other inserts. We’re super excited for the return of Plum as well!
