The Western Flyer might just be the ultimate overnight bag: classic lines,
thoughtful features, three comfortable carrying methods to choose between, and, of course, the materials and construction you've come to expect from TOM BIHN.
The Western Flyer has two main compartments of equal size (just like the Brain Bag backpack).
The front compartment has a vertical divider that zips
out of the way if it's not wanted. Tom has designed three sizes of Packing Cube ($15-18)
especially for the main compartments of the
Western Flyer. (You can order them separately here.)
Either half of the divided front
compartment can fit a pair of shoes, which is Tom's personal Holy
Grail in any travel bag. (You may want to first put your shoes in
a Fabric/Fabric Packing Cube or a plastic bag.)
The back compartment is large and
undivided, and has annex clips that can either be removed or clip a Horizontal
or Vertical
Brain Cell laptop case securely inside of the Western Flyer.
(Not all sizes of Brain Cell will fit in the Western Flyer: see drop-down menu
to the left for a list of sizes that do fit.) Are you wondering which size of Brain Cell
you need for your laptop? Consult our Laptop Bag Fit Guide.
For access to all things
small-and-easily-lost, the front of the Western Flyer features three
pockets. One is an open-top pocket for quick access to tickets,
brochures, travel guides or letters. We don't particularly recommend it,
but if the front compartment is not too full you can put a one-liter
water bottle in this pocket as well. (We don't recommend doing so because
if you forget the bottle is there and pick up the Western Flyer by its end
the bottle could tumble out.)
The other two pockets on the front of the Western Flyer zip close
for security. The larger of the two pockets is big enough for most standard size
paperback books. Both zippered pockets have o-rings (there are also more o-rings
inside of the main compartments of the Western Flyer)
for attaching Key
Snaps and/or Clear,
Padded, Cordura, or Cork Organizer Pouches.
The Western Flyer has one large
padded handle directly above the center of gravity for a comfortable
carry, plus two padded grab handles on the short ends to facilitate
pulling the bag out from the overhead compartment or a locker, or from
under a seat.
Two steel double-plated "D"-rings accept our Absolute and
Terra Grip
Shoulder Straps so you can carry the Western Flyer on your shoulder as well (almost
anyone else's shoulder strap will work too).
For longer sprints through
the airport or across town, the Western Flyer converts to a single-strap
sling bag (along the lines of our Buzz bag.)
The EV50 foam padded sling strap features a simple stretch mesh pocket for small cell
phones, pens etc., and folds up to tuck away inside a zippered
pocket on the back side of the Western Flyer.
The Western Flyer is built of
1050 Ballistic nylon and is lined with Dyneema/nylon ripstop; YKK #10
Aquaguard zippers close all pockets and compartments.
