General information: CDC: Use of Cloth Face Coverings to Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19 / WHO: When and how to use masks / The Atlantic: The Real Reason To Wear A Mask / our warnings and instructions for use.

The V4 Mask is similar to our V3 Mask in that it's a good option for people who want to sing, talk, open their mouths wide to laugh or who have facial hair or beards. Most (but not all) people will find they can open their mouths really wide without this mask slipping off the nose or above the chin. It features soft & comfortable adjustable ear loops, a customizable conforming nose bridge, and a lanyard for convenient wear.

As mask designers, we continually look forward to further research investigating potential mask materials. There’s always more we can learn; scientists and researchers are working overtime on behalf of their communities, countries, and the world on various projects related to COVID-19 and our collective human response to this pandemic. As the resulting scientific findings continue to emerge, our understanding of the actions we can take to slow the spread of COVID-19 will continue to evolve.

We were honored to play a very small role in a recently published research study: Filtration Efficiencies of Nanoscale Aerosol by Cloth Mask Materials Used to Slow the Spread of SARS-CoV-2 published in ACS Nano. As you can read in the acknowledgements of the study, our small role was to send fabric samples to the researchers for testing.

We've worked with a fabric mill on a new 100% Cotton Flannel fabric option for our upcoming V4 Reusable Cloth Face Masks; the design of this fabric is intended to have a chaotic web of fibers, which could create more surfaces with which aerosolized particles could interact, as indicated as a possibility in the study. Our 100% Cotton Flannel is produced in an OEKO-TEX Certified fabric mill. Please note that this is not a medical grade fabric.

The exact specifications of the 100% Cotton Flannel fabric are as follows:

We find the flannel to be soft and cozy; some folks may find it to feel warmer because, well, it's a soft and cozy flannel. In our experience, we found it comfortable and breathable enough to wear while walking uphill on an 80-degree day at a brisk pace. Your mileage and perception may vary.

For any face mask to do its job, it is important that it is properly worn and worn as snug as possible to prevent gaps. Our V4 design offers two features that, in our experience, improve fit. First, the V4 has the best nose bridge seal we've made so far; again, your mileage may vary, but we and our testers find that glasses don't fog, assuming the included (removable) metal nose piece in the nose bridge is conformed over one's nose. Second, the ear loops on the V4 are adjustable, which allows you to adjust the ear loops based on your face and ear shape and size; this means you have the potential to snug the mask closer to your face.

For optimum fit, please make sure to measure your face and choose the best size based on our sizing instructions.

What's new in the V4 design:

The best nose bridge seal we've made so far; your mileage may vary, but we and our testers find that glasses don't fog, assuming it's fitted properly.

Similar to our unique V3 design — most folks can open their mouths wide to sing, talk, laugh without the mask slipping — but with two layers of fabric instead of three. We wanted to offer a two-layer version for those of you who are concerned with three layers feeling too warm.

And just like our V2 and V3 Masks, the V4 features adjustable, soft and comfortable ear loops for a customized fit, as well as a convenient lanyard.

Full Description:

The V4 is similar to our V3 in that it's a good option for people who want to sing, chant, open their mouths wide to laugh or who have facial hair or beards. Most (but not all) people will find they can open their mouths really wide without this mask slipping off the nose or above the chin. If that sounds good to you, make sure you order the correct size (and err on the side of larger rather than smaller if you're in-between sizes) and make sure you tighten the ear loops so they're snug (snug, but not too tight!)

The ear loops and neck strap of the V4 are adjustable for a customized fit. The material we use for the ear loops is comfortable, conforming, and stretchy — but it’s not the scratchy elastic that’s typically found on masks.

We recommend washing your face masks in a reusable mesh laundry bag; this will prevent the ear loops/lanyard from getting caught on other stuff in the washer and dryer and will help protect your mask.

Mask V1 is $13 because it's "buy one, donate one". Mask V2 is $9 because it's more expensive to make than V1, but is a standalone purchase. Because our V3 and V4 Masks take more time to sew, they're more expensive to make: we've decided to also offer these makes as standalone purchases; $16.00 for one mask. If you'd like a V2, V3, or V4 mask and would like to support our efforts to donate masks (as of 07/18 we've donated over 115,000 masks so far thanks to you) consider adding DONATION ONLY Reusable Cloth Face Masks to your shopping cart.

Remember: all of our face masks are cut & sewn in Seattle, Washington, USA.

V4 Reusable Cloth Face Mask - Full Details

We know this is already a very long product description. We want to share as much information as we can so you can choose the best face mask for you. Use this directory to jump to the details and explanation that will help you make your decision:

Comfortable, stretchy adjustable ear loops and neck lanyard

Our innovative ear loop and neck lanyard material is comfortable, conforming, and stretchy — but it’s not the scratchy elastic that’s typically found on masks. Even when worn around the ears, we (and others) find our material to be quite comfortable for longterm wear. And in our V2, V3 and V4 Masks, the ear loops are adjustable to increase comfort even more.

As we mentioned, the ear loops and neck lanyard are both adjustable; you can shorten or lengthen them. To adjust, gently tug up on the ear strap (lengthens ear strap, shortens neck strap) or down on the neck strap (shortens ear strap, lengthens neck strap) at the point where they are knotted together.

We find the neck lanyard to be a convenient feature when we go out for walks. If no other people are around, we can let the mask hang around our neck and against the sternum; if we see another person coming our way, it's easy to very quickly grasp the ear loops (w/out touching the fabric of the mask) and put the mask on.

Choosing the right size of mask

When tightly and properly secured via the adjustable strap, our V4 Reusable Cloth Face Mask will provide a good, secure fit and reduce gaps.

To determine which size you need, take a flat ruler and place it next to your nose. Measure from the bridge of your nose to the point of your chin.

Choose Small/Medium if you measure LESS than 4.5” / 115mm

Choose Medium/Large if you measure MORE than 4.5” / 115mm

And if you measure exactly 4.5": we'd recommend choosing the Medium/Large size.

Customizable nose bridge

We’ve added a fabric slot over the nose bridge; your mask will arrive with a metal nose piece inserted into the slot that can be bent to conform your mask over your nose. Our V1 Mask includes a twist-tie; our V2 and V3 Masks include a metal nose piece, which we chose because V2, V3 and V4 are made with slightly thicker fabrics.

Part of the reason the open nose bridge slot is so great is that you can effectively customize the firmness of the conforming metal piece to be what works best for you: replace the metal nose piece with a twist tie or vice versa, or choose a different wire altogether.

Additionally, we determined that the first component on a mask most likely to fail after repeated machine washing and drying is the bendable, metal nose piece; by making that piece removable and replaceable on our masks, we’ve increased the longevity of the mask and have allowed you to replace that part if/when it does fail at little to no cost (most of us have extra twist-ties at home… you know, the things produce comes bundled in or bakery bags are tied with.)

You can wash and dry your mask with the twist-tie or metal nose piece inserted; that said, to make those pieces last longer, it's a good idea to remove them.

For washing instructions, please see CDC: How to Wash Cloth Face Coverings and World Health Organization / Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) advice for the public: When and how to use masks (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks) for more information. Do not microwave or put in the oven.

We recommend washing your face masks in a reusable mesh laundry bag; this will prevent the ear loops from getting caught on other stuff in the washer and dryer and will help protect your mask.

We don't recommend using bleach with our masks. We haven't experimented much with ironing these masks; they may only be able to take low heat.

Made in U.S.A. (and what that means)

Some of you will ask why our masks (or our bags, for that matter!) are more expensive. Our business model is unusual: we are designer, manufacturer, and direct retailer and our entire company shares the same 16,000 square feet in Seattle, the city with the highest minimum wage in the United States. We're also a Certified B Corporation. The contract manufacturers we work with are also in Seattle. In short, our labor and overhead costs are likely significantly higher than that of a business who manufactures their products overseas.
