Hybrid convertible everyday bag with tuckable backpack straps and a fully removable shoulder strap.

21 Liters / 1300 cu. in.

TLDR

Meet the convertible backpack that you'll soon be singing the praises of. The Cambiata is a 21-liter pack with a whole lotta open keys space!

Full Description

The inspiration to make a tote backpack actually came from our Forum! Members had a list of requests for features that they wanted to see in a new TOM BIHN design — something that looks sleek on the outside but has all the usual TOM BIHN organizational features that they love, is convertible from one form to another, and ideally can stand up on its own. We took the feedback to heart and ran with it!

We’ve pre-answered as many questions as we could think of over in the Cambiata FAQ.

Multiple Carry Styles

Built-in backpack straps that can be folded and tucked away for a measure; the coda of this piece is the included, fully-detachable shoulder strap for use as a tote.

Cambiata in backpack mode and shoulder-carry mode.

Exterior Pockets

Five external pockets of varying sizes and shapes for all your needs, from your vast array of tuning forks (or y'know, a water bottle, phone, or anything in between), and a couple of big pockets large enough to hold your portfolio of sheet music or The Red Book. Everything you need in easy reach just a zip away, with plenty of o-rings tucked in like so many grace notes.

Interior Pockets

A medley of pockets outfit the interior of the Cambiata, the interior flap pocket directly on the inside of the opening is a generously sized mesh pocket perfect for your collection of custom mouthpieces.

A large elasticized pocket on the back panel for holding your tailcoat (rainshell?) close to your back and keep the majority of the pocket open, and a couple of smaller elasticized pocket for keeping a couple things inside but handy; an o-ring adorns the top of each of these smaller pockets begging for straps to be attached like the flag on a quaver.

Dedicated Laptop Compartment

A large laptop compartment ornaments the top of the Cambiata between the shoulder straps and main pocket, allowing a laptop of up to 14.5" x 10" in size.

What's Included

We include the following accessories to give you a good amount of options for your new bag right out of the gate.

One Full-Removable Shoulder Strap

A shoulder strap made from 1.5" wide webbing, with a minimum length of 26" and maximum length of 52" shoulder strap for shoulder carry. It's fully detachable with leave-no-trace gatekeeper hardware.

One 8-inch Black Webbing Snaphook/Snaphook Key Strap

A Key Strap is a strip of webbing with plastic snaphooks on the end. The 8” Key Strap in Black that’s included in most of our larger bags is, for many, the gateway to a world of organization via Key Straps and Organizer Pouches. All the members of the Key Strap family are intended to make locating things in your bag easier and more instinctive. Pulling out a small item or pouch tethered to a strap is easier than rooting around aimlessly in the depths of your pack; you can also rest assured that anything hooked to a strap is much less likely to fall out or otherwise be left behind. You can find more Key Strap colors and varieties on the Key Strap page.

A Set of Black Zipper Pulls

Some folks prefer metal zipper pulls. Others prefer cord pulls. So, what to do about that? We think the best solution (in most cases) is to offer metal pulls and include a starter pack of Cord Pulls with most bags.

One Sternum Strap Assembly

An adjustable and removable sternum and waist straps with leave-no-trace hardware: if you don't like or don't use your sternum strap, remove it and leave (almost) nothing behind.

What's Optional

Freudian Slips

The Synapse 19 or Medium Café Bag Freudian Slips fit well in the main compartment of the Cambiata for some extra organization.

Packing Cubes

The Aeronaut 30 Packing Cube in small and the Synik 30 Packing Cube in small are both great options for this bag.

    Great EDC for work

I've had the Cambiata for about a month now. I use it for work. I specifically bought it because I needed something that would fit a freezable lunch bag that I have but also my work gear and a laptop.

The Cambiata works perfectly. I had one of those backpacks with a cooler on the bottom. But with my gear in the top, it was hard to get stuff in and out of the cooler part. With the Cambiata, I can fit my gear in the bottom and the freezable lunch bag fits perfectly on top.

The laptop compartment is also an improvement. The backpack cooler had the straps over the laptop sleeve so they were in the way when moving the laptop in or out. Plus it did not have a zipper on it like the Cambiata.

I love that I can switch to using it as a crossbody carry as well. The strap that came with it is not bad, but I think I will definitely will be ordering an Absolute strap the next time I order from Tom Bihn.

The pockets are great too. I can fit my work badge and keys in the top pocket. My 18oz water bottle fits in the water bottle pocket easily. It does push into the bag but I can still fit everything in there anyway.

Not What I Was Expecting, but Still Useful

So, when I purchased the Cambria, I was hoping for something to replace my Co-Pilot. My Co-Pilot had been my work bag since 2019 (2nd pic are all the items I typically carried in my Co-Pilot).

But fall 2021, in addition to being an office manager, I took up part-time teaching High School Science which meant I was having to haul around my Co-Pilot & another bag. I felt like a pack mule. I wanted to condense the two bags for the 2022 school year, specifically into one bag that I could wear evenly on my back.

I was hoping the Cambria would be that bag.

    It was not.

My laptop and ALL my file folders for my work as an office manager are carried in "landscape" orientation and turning my file folders to be carried "portrait" orientation quickly turned into a disaster. It was disappointing to say the least.

The Cambria however does EASILY fit ALL the books I carry for teaching every single day, which is nice.

    Pros:

    1. I'm able to easily see my books & grab what I need for that period & then slide them back in without fighting the bag;

    2. There is PLENTY of room at the top to place my lunch, my Side Effect, my computer's power cord (I just hand carry my computer for now, although I did squeeze my laptop in that main compartment with my books when it was raining outside);

    3. Mesh inner flap pocket - Incredibly useful & doesn't not interfere with the items I pile on top of my books.

    4. I have been using the Cambria daily since Sep 22 -- it's holding up well to the daily…

Great bag, no fuss, lots of room

I travel with the Cambiata often, along with the Pilot. I use the Cambiata as my carry on, placing it in the overhead bin where the size allows it to fit anywhere.. Sometimes I put it under the seat and it fits nicely there. This bag has a wide open interior and plenty of smaller pockets with o-rings for attaching smaller pouches. Lately I have been using the bag as a backpack and don’t use the longer strap. I like being able to tuck the backpack straps away when I check the bag. If I were to change anything, I would have the sternum strap be able to come lower. It seems to ride a bit high. Very pleased over all.

Seems ideal for our use case!

Our Cambiata has been setup. I like the lower center of gravity compared to the shoulder straps over the handles method of mounting the Synapse 19 it's replacing. It should make transfers easier. It seems easy enough to mount and un mount and I don’t think I’ll kick it too much, but time will tell!

Inside there’s a half size eagle creek cube with a fleece and a change of cloths across the bottom, a quarter size first aid kit, a pack of wipes, a smock, contractor bag (leg poncho), and my fully loaded medium cafe bag. Without that, there’s plenty of room for a bit of errands, or her dry bag / stick blender/ bottle kit for blending on the road.
