Distinguished by an interchangeable stripe, the Super Ego is our largest messenger bag. (It's bigger than both the ID and Ego messenger bags.) If you need to carry a big laptop, camera gear, and/or a ton of other stuff, the Super Ego is the right bag for you.
Under the front flap, on both the right and the left, are zippered pockets that are accessible with the flap open or closed. These pockets have #8 YKK Aquaguard® water-repellent zippers. On top of these zippered pockets are two open-top wallet-sized pockets. All zippered pockets on the Super Ego feature strong, easy-to-grab zipper pulls. On either side of the zippered pockets are small stretch-mesh pockets with an open top — great for storing pens or other small items.
Behind the zippered pockets is a large open pouch that spans the width
of the bag and features organizer pockets for your pens, iPhone, and
wallet. You'll also find several
Behind the front flap and pouch is the zippered main compartment, so you don't have to unbuckle the main flap closure to access your laptop and other stuff. This large compartment closes with a #10 YKK Aquaguard® water-repellent zipper. Inside are removable Annex Clips designed to secure all sizes of the optional Horizontal Brain Cell hard-sided laptop case against the back panel of the bag. The Horizontal Brain Cell is available in sizes designed specifically for Apple laptops and PC laptops; we recommend consulting our Laptop Bag Fit Guide to find the appropriate size of Brain Cell for your laptop. Note that the Super Ego is the only bag large enough to house the Size 2XL Brain Cell, designed for large 17" PC laptops. Also able to clip securely inside the Super Ego via Annex Clips is our Camera I-O (Insert-Outsert), a padded case to protect your DSLR and lenses. The Camera I-O can also be used as a great, stand-alone, shoot-from-the-hip photo bag. A smaller version of the Super Ego — the Ego — is available.
The back and bottom of the main compartment of the Super Ego are padded for your comfort and to help the bag maintain its shape and structure, even when it's full of stuff.
On the left and right sides of the Super Ego are unobtrusive water bottle pockets; they have compression straps so you can snug them down when not in use.
The back exterior of the Super Ego features an open, flat back pocket perfect for even the thickest magazines or newspapers, and a removable 1-1/2" webbing waist strap for extra stability when you're on your bike (motor or push).
You can choose between three different shoulder straps to use with the Super Ego. The Standard Shoulder Strap, included in the price of the Super Ego, is a 1-1/2" wide heavy nylon webbing strap. It features a comfortable, wide foam pad that won't slip off your shoulder and is designed to conform to your shoulder and back. For an extra $15.00, you can switch out the Standard Shoulder Strap and replace it with the Q-AM (Quick-Adjust Messenger) Shoulder Strap. Or, for an extra $20.00, you get the Absolute Shoulder Strap instead of the Standard Shoulder Strap. Most people will be satisfied with just one kind of shoulder strap, but, should you choose to do so, you can purchase more than one kind of shoulder strap and switch between them.
The handle is constructed of our U.S. made, 1050 denier, high tenacity ballistic nylon — wrapped around high quality, 1/2" thick PORON® foam — with a "just right" center of gravity, so you'll carry the Super Ego as effortlessly as you carry a typical briefcase.
For added visibility when using the Super Ego while on your bike, we offer the optional Guardian Light which can be attached via a belt clip to the front of the bag on one of the webbing strips that secure the interchangeable front stripe in place. When not in use as a safety light, the Guardian Light can be used as an interior bag light.
A tiger can't change its stripes, but a Super Ego can: the Super Ego's front flap closes with a 2" wide heavy-duty plastic Duraflex® Warrior buckle that attaches to the bag with an interchangeable piece of hook and loop material (like Velcro®). These Duraflex® Warrior buckle stripes come in a variety of colors and materials — a stripe weighs 1.1 oz. One stripe is included with your Super Ego; you can order additional stripes for $5.00 each on this page (or here).
If you get a new job or have a midlife crisis, you don't have to get a whole new bag: just a new stripe.

As reviewed by Gear Patrol magazine:
"The SuperEgo isnít just a messenger bag. Itís a well thought out commuter gear haven that the minds at Tom Bihn actually took the time to truly think about. If youíre looking for a messenger/laptop/commuter bag that is as tough as nails, solidly made and wonderfully personal, look no further. Tom Bihnís got it nailed. Itís a SuperEgo stroke of the highest order. We suggest you take it for a spin. You wonít know what you did without it." Read the full review.
As reviewed by Bicycle Times magazine:
"At first, I was a bit skeptical of the Super Ego as an on-the-bike kinda bag, wrongly assuming that it might be yet another ďmessenger-styleĒ bag that wasnít actually well designed to wear on a bike. Iím happy to report that my initial assumption couldnít be further from the truth. This bag is actually far more comfortable than some other bags Iíve used, thanks to the padded back and very comfy padded shoulder strap. In conjunction with the Brain Cell, this set-up makes carrying my laptop to and from work a much more comfortable and secure operation." Read the full review.

My Super Ego is stuffed
"I received my bags much earlier than my laptop, and was very impressed with the construction. I proceeded to start filling it with all of the stuff that I like to carry back and forth to work every day. I am a self-professed geek and prefer to carry quite a bevy of cables, adapters and tools (for geek emergencies). The bag carried well and had plenty of pockets for my doodads. I received my laptop a couple of days ago and loaded everything into the Super Ego. Since the laptop is large, and the power brick is about 3X the size of the standard, it eats up a lot of the room in the back compartment. However I did still manage to stuff a full size external CD enclosure and a mouse in there with it. Filling the rear compartment with extras does make the front compartment a bit tighter. In there I carry my half-full snake charmer, organizer and CD case as well as a screwdriver set and multi-tool. The front two zipper pockets are filled with lights (head mounted, flashlight and book light) and tea bags, respectively. Finally the outside front pockets contain my iPod and cell phone, leaving the rear document pocket for a magazine and some documentation." — posted by robotguy
First impressions of the Super Ego
"Size: Exactly. I developed some trepidation about the size after reading certain comments on this forum and elsewhere, and thought "Gee, it seemed like a good size when I tried one out before ..." The size is exactly as I remember it. Large, but not outlandish. (I'm medium build, medium height -- 5'10"). " — posted by timothy
Super Ego Arrives
"So yeah, I've gushed on long enough about this new bag, the Super Ego. I don't really have anything negative to say, except maybe for a few wish list add-ons like the supple Ultrasuede-lined pockets and maybe an additional zippered pocket where the flap is (features I found very useful on the ID). But regardless, I was really glad I made the purchase for I think I may have finally found the perfect bag in terms of everything." — posted by lpotr4
Super Ego Review
"The front of the bag, under the flap is wonderful. That main compartment is large enough for me to hold everything I need at a quick grab. The two front pockets can hold pencils and small cases (in my case, a caselogic USB drive holder.) The side zippered pockets that go behind those front pockets are spacious, and obviously the Wasabi Cordura looks beautiful as usual. One of the pockets holds a Mini + Small padded organizer pouches, and the other holds a clear small plus my Macbook charger."
