    Perhaps the answer lies in homage to the mystical.
    In Bedouin (middle eastern desert tribe) tapestries, especially their dowry panels,
    the women making them typically made a backwards series of stitches, ( or a not so obvious break in the pattern)
    in one particular spot.
    They did this to signify that only God could make a "perfect" work of art.

    Perhaps Tom Bihn is adapting this ancient ritual in its popular Side Effect for a similar reason.

    My ancient Indigo/?? SE has one, my new Nordic/Solar does not.
