Darcy blogged yesterday (2/15/19) about UPS eliminating left-hand turns for efficiency. In the 1970s, former FBI agent Joseph L. Schott published a book, No Left Turns, about J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI (http://www.amazon.com/No-Left-Turns-.../dp/0345250133). Maybe Hoover wasn't being ideological after all, just efficient and ecological before his time.
Side note: When The X-Files was popular, I called the FBI to ask if the agents really addressed each other as "Agent Smith" and "Agent Jones." (This is the kind of thing copy editors do.) The agent I spoke with said no, it was just "Tom" and "Jane." I see the "Agent Smith" TV convention is still alive and well on today's shows.
