I was caught in the rain yesterday and since I had to bike home I was faced with the problem of how to avoid getting my stuff in my Little Swift wet. The solution? Stuffing it all into my smart alec! I was actually amazed I could fit it all so I had my husband shoot a video of me unpacking it when I got home. Neither of us is much of a videographer and my attempts in the past to compress videos enough to be able to put them on the web have resulted in awfully grainy videos. Any suggestions of what software to use to reduce the file size of a video shot with a digital camera? it needs to run on OS X...

i'm very excited to hear that you have a video to share!!

whether i shoot with my video camera or a point and shoot that captures video, i import the video footage into imovie.

the importing process places the captured video into an "event."

i then take video from the captured event and place it into a "project."

so the project is your edited video. you can add clips, transitions, text, music, even still photos to it. you can even crop a clip if needed, or record a voice over.

when you've finished editing your video and are happy with it, it's time to share it with the world. there are a few easy avenues to do this.

what i do is export the video at the desired resolution (these days, it's 1280x720, or HD video, or 720p resolution video). the resulting file won't be small. if you'd prefer a smaller file, you can choose a lower resolution.

i then upload the exported video to youtube. imovie has an option of uploading directly to youtube, but i've had mixed results with that - so i upload to youtube from the browser.

then, you're all set to share the url of the youtube video with the world!

another places where you can share your video is apple's mobileme service if you happen to have an account. you can upload from imovie directly to mobileme.

there are other websites where you can share your video also. i haven't tried any of them, since youtube works well and darcy can easily post youtube videos in the blog.

I was hoping you'd reply to my questions! Looks like I have all I'll need - iMovie, Youtube account as well as mobileme account. Just to make sure - youtube will take your large file? just wanted to clarify that...

this week is a bit insane for me but hopefully I can have the video up before the end of the week...

yes, youtube will allow you to upload up to a 2gb file. the largest i've ever uploaded was about 680mb.

What is the limit, in terms of minutes of video, for a free YouTube account?

I understood the max was 10 minutes, but I've seen some YouTube vids that are almost half an hour long.

if i'm not mistaken, it used to be 10 minutes and was then increased to 15 minutes. there isn't a limit for partners, however.
