A review of the Ruck's Sac
I got my hands on the Ruck's Sac this evening and loaded it with my son's essentials as we went out to visit my wife's family. My intention in getting the Ruck's Sac was to use it as a diaper bag, and later have it be my son's first backpack.
I was surprised at the small size at first because I haven't had my hands on a backpack this small. But as you'll read below, it houses quite a bit - definitely the essentials and more. It is also very well sized for a child, and it is also very comfortable on a 5' 8" adult.
The Ruck's Sac is very light - this should make it easy for young children to carry. And, the shoulder straps are as comfortable as the ones on my Smart Alec.
I first closed the drawstring completely, then realized that I didn't need to close it all the way. Not closing it all the way allows easier access inside the bag.
The main compartment held:
- a cold pack with two 9oz bottles (one for milk and one for water);
- 2 diapers, wipes and a changing pad;
- 2 small containers of food;
- a point and shoot digital camera (Canon PowerShot G7);
- a clear organizer pouch with spoons and strawberry banana bars (thanks Tom!).
I placed the hand sanitizer in the pocket in the flap for easy access.
The tissues, washcloths, and "wet ones" wipes went in the front pouch pocket - the organizer pockets are great for this stuff.
There was still space for more in the main compartment - we just took what we needed for the evening.
I could easily have carried a couple of books for him and a ball or other toy. This will make a nice pack for trips to the park and such.
I can also organize my essentials into the Ruck's Sac - making it the only bag I carry when I am out with my son. My wallet, cell phone, and moleskine notebook can all fit nicely into the pouch in the flap and the diagonal pouch. Keys can hang from the provided key snap in the main compartment.
I would still like to see a pocket on the back of the Ruck's Sac. There is no good reason to have this other than my desire to have easy access to the diaper changing pad :). I guess one could also carry magazines in this pocket.
I am thinking that the Ruck's Sac might also work well for me when I want to carry my SLR, accessories and a few other things, and not carry a dedicated camera bag. I will post more on this as I explore this option.
