I did about three weeks in Italy last winter with an Aeronaut, and it worked out just fine (I flat-packed a MCB into the Aeronaut so only had one bag with me on the plane and on most in-country train...
Amanda, I always use a medium clear pouch for just this purpose. I generally print my boarding passes, but I've carried several passes plus itineraries and passports with no trouble at all.

Why not check out a cache? I have a 11.6 inch ultrabook that came with it's own case. I use that, but I have brought the laptop to the TB store and found a cache that fits it perfectly.
