Practical Travel Gear reviews the Packing Cubes

TOM BIHN Packing Cubes Reviewed by Practical Travel Gear

"They have good YKK zippers and ripstock nylon fabric. They're mesh on one side so damp clothes don't build up mildew. Here's the real difference though: they're not made in China. If you want to put your own personal stimulus plan in place and buy American, you can do so at Tom Bihn without paying a premium. The cubes are $15 to $18 each and should last a decade or two."

flitcraft: In praise of steel....

"What could be more boring than gray? Not as assertive as black, not as striking as brighter colors, it's the blah middling choice for those who's rather not choose. At least, that's what I always thought. I never gave steel a second thought as a color.

But was I ever wrong! I just got the Cafe Bag in steel (with an olive interior) and it is drop-dead gorgeous. It's a chameleon of a color, depending on lighting and what you're wearing it with. Worn over dark teal or hunter green, it takes on some of that tone and looks slightly teal-gray. Worn with burgundy or chocolate brown, I swear it's slate blue-grey. Cloudy daylight tends to bring out the tealish tones, and sunshine the grey-blue tones. Fluorescent versus incandescent also changes the hue.

This is not your father's boring gray. It's a sophisticated, mercurial, subtle color. And it's my new favorite, hands down."

Shiva: Adventures in visiting the store!

Note: Our Seattle store is closed until late April/early May.

"Anyway, I was in Seattle for a conference, and a visit to the Tom Bihn store was high on my must-dos. I called and they said they would be open Mondays. My friend and I walked down all the way on First Avenue from the Convention Center--downtown; a good hour long walk. It was a great day for a walk in Seattle, and I got to see the city in ways that you don't when you drive around.

When we arrived at the store, it was closed. There was a note that said the store would not be open cos of the weather. I was so disappointed that I was willing to cry; and trust me, I am not even young!!! I went to Outdoor Research, and they were truly helpful and gave me a number for June who works at TB.

And wonder of wonders, June said she was up at the factory, and she brought us up on the elevator; and for the next hour, she left us to our devices in the store....I was completely taken aback. The place was completely clean, clear, uncluttered; and the folks acted like I was just visiting their home. No one hovered around; or watched; or sold me anything. They just let me explore. I walked around the factory---and watched the bags being made."

Suggestions for Russell in Miami?

Russell posted in the Travel Tips section of the TOM BIHN Forums:
"I'll be headed down to Miami this weekend for the Ultra Music Festival. Wondered if anyone on the board had any tips for Miami or Ultra if you have been or are going?

Got my flights and hotel setup, staying near the airport, and I'll be packing my Tom Bihn Western Flyer, leaving the MacBook and Brain Cell behind as this is a vacation trip (no work allowed!)"

Do you have any suggestions for Russell? If so, post them here.
