New fabric: Solar/White nylon/Dyneema

When we first considered adding a new color of our Dyneema/nylon
rip-stop fabric, we had a difficult choice to make: the sapphire blue
color, of which we were fortunate enough to acquire a small quantity,
was not only beautiful but also very popular. However, we wanted
something that would brighten up the inside of a bag when used as a
lining. Based loosely on the color of mustard flowers, we think the
new Solar/White Dyneema/rip-stop turned out very cool indeed.

The TOM BIHN Solar/White Dyneema ripstop
“Our Dyneema/nylon fabric consists of a base fabric of 200 denier nylon
with a woven rip-stop grid of Dyneema; it is a blend of 94% nylon and 6%
Dyneema. I came across this fabric as I was looking for a light-weight
alternative to our standard 500 denier Cordura nylon. Many manufacturers,
in order to save weight, use a simple 200 denier nylon as a lining material
and to make accessories, but I’ve always been unimpressed with the tear
strength of this 100% nylon fabric. Even though the Dyneema
makes up only a small percent of the fiber content in our version, it makes
a huge difference in the finished fabric: with the Dyneema rip-stop
added, the fabric becomes essentially tear-proof. Woven and dyed to our
specifications in Japan, and three times the price of the 100% nylon version,
one would ask: is this over-kill? Maybe a little, but isn’t that why you love us?”
