Tom Bihn Volume Comparison Spreadsheet by thax

“I have knocked together an Excel and Open Office spreadsheet of all the TB bags I could find. I was looking at all the questions about size and volume, so this should make it easier to sort and find out what bag is best for you (or all of them).
Take a look and post anything you would like to add and change, thanks.” – posted by thax in the TOM BIHN Forums.

Veterans Day

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John Fitzgerald Kennedy

There’s a wealth of information on the history of Veterans Day and what we can do to honor veterans year round at the U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs Web site.

“Has anyone out there seen a bag of this sort used while going though airport security? If so let me know. I want to believe these will be accepted universally, but I can’t shake my doubts.”

Use these buttons (and see some cool stuff)

TOM BIHN Buttons help you find cool stuff

Keep an eye out for the above helpful buttons on the left side of most product pages.

F.A.Q. Button

The F.A.Q. for a product covers the questions that we frequently receive but couldn’t answer in the product description. For example: “Will the cell phone pocket on the Buzz fit my iPod or iPhone?”

Video Button

As of today, you’ll only find this button on the Checkpoint Flyer and Aeronaut pages. Clicking on the Video Button on those product pages will pop-up a window in which you can watch great video(s) of the bags. We hope to add video of more bags soon!

Colors

Clicking on this button will reveal swatches of every color of fabric we use.
Click on each swatch for a larger swatch and description of color,
including PantoneĀ® approximate matches for most colors.

Fit List

A very important button – the Fit List will tell you if your laptop will fit in the bag you’re interested in. Either compare the dimensions of your laptop to the interior dimensions listed in the Fit List, or find your make/model of laptop in the list(s).

Why a shoulder strap isn’t included with some of our bags

Occasionally, a customer will ask why we don’t include a shoulder strap with the Brain Cell, Aeronaut, Western Flyer, Zephyr, Checkpoint Flyer, or Empire Builder bags. Here’s why:

  • Our Absolute Shoulder Strap can be used with 13 different TOM BIHN bags. Many customers have more than one of our bags. Instead of collecting a new Absolute Strap with each bag purchase (and paying for it each time, too) they can buy one Absolute Strap once and switch it between the bags.
  • Sometimes customers already have a non-TOM BIHN shoulder strap that they’d like to use with their TOM BIHN bag.
  • Usually when you do get a free strap included with a bag (with the exception of our Standard Messenger Strap which comes with our messenger bags!), it’s a pretty rudimentary (read: not high quality) strap. The Absolute Shoulder Strap is $30 because it’s the best shoulder strap we’ve found. We don’t want you using a cheap shoulder strap that might break on a heavy bag – especially if your laptop, camera, or other equipment is inside!
  • Off topic in the forums: Best light bike lock?

timothy posted in the TOM BIHN Forums:

“One of the things that frequently gets stuffed into the outside (under-flap) pocket of my Super Ego is a U-style bike lock. Mine is heavier than I’d like, even if it’s not one of those 30lb chain-link anchors. I wonder, though, in the general spirit of light travel that seems to animate many people here, are there any *light* bike locks worth owning? My bike is neither a beater nor fancy, but I’m reluctant to use anything less substantial; I also have a moderately thick cable + smaller lock, but that smaller lock is of the older Kryponite variety, susceptible to being opened with a Bic pen. (I’ve see it only on YouTube, myself, haven’t yet tried to do it.)”

    Any suggestions?

    Almost sold-out colors…

Below is a list of bags in color combinations of which we only have a few left. We thought we’d let you know because it’s unlikely that these bags will ever be made again in these color combinations – for example, the Smart Alec will never again be available in Black/Grape because we no longer have the Grape 1050 denier ballistic nylon fabric.

TOM BIHN Forums: Newbie question: ID vs Empire Builder

    “Folks,
I’ve been lurking for a few weeks now. After reading tons of reviews, I decided to order the Aeronaut for my first attempt at carryon only travel. I’m in the military and recently moved to a job which has a lot more travel (short trips, 2-4 days) and do not want to have to wait for checked bags. I’m excited to receive my Aeronaut this week but now am wondering if it is time to upgrade my laptop bag.” – Posted by Lone Piper in the TOM BIHN Forums. The New Apple 15″ MacBook Pro and 13″ MacBook

Apple today introduced updated versions of their 15.4″ MacBook Pro, 17″ MacBook Pro, and 13″ MacBook Pro.

Both the 15.4″ MacBook Pro and 13″ MacBook received minor chassis sizing changes. Many of you have been calling or emailing to ask when new sizes of our Brain Cell laptop case or Checkpoint Flyer laptop insert will be available for these laptops: the good news is that it appears (as of now) that our current sizes for those laptops – Size 4X for the 15.4″ MacBook Pro and Size 6 for the 13″ MacBook – will also fit the new versions. We will be confirming this tomorrow evening and will update you then with the latest news.

If you are in the Seattle area and plan to buy one of the new Apple laptops, please email us at seattle@tombihn.com. In exchange for visiting our Seattle factory/showroom and giving us a peak at your new laptop, we’ll give you the grand tour! We’d be in the market for new Apple laptops ourselves if we hadn’t just purchased a new 13″ MacBook and 15.4″ MacBook Pro this summer.
