Using Packing Cubes in the Smart Alec (photos)

In the Forums, bchaplin asked: “I am considering the Smart Alec backpack for certain trips where I want to travel light, or at least as an excursion bag if I want to leave my main suitcase in the hotel and take a short side trip. (I am NOT an ultralight traveler!) If it is not holding any computer equipment, which packing cubes, and how many, fit well in this bag?”

Various forum members added their thoughts to bchaplin’s forum thread and we decided to respond in photos.

A little background: our Packing Cubes are designed to help you organize and keep neat and tidy your clothes, socks, and shoes. They’re the perfect complement to — and are available in specific sizes for — our Aeronaut, Tri-Star, and Western Flyer carry-on travel bags. It’s not uncommon for folks to also want to use our Packing Cubes inside of our backpacks, briefcases, and messenger bags. For the Smart Alec backpack in particular, we recommend using the Packing Cubes for the Western Flyer — their dimensions will best fit in and utilize the space inside of the Smart Alec.

These two photos should give you an idea of how many of what size Travel Stuff Sacks you can fit in our Aeronaut maximum carry-on travel bag. The triangles with numbers on them indicate which size of Travel Stuff Sack (Size 1, 2, 3, or 4) you’re seeing.

AppleTell reviews the Synapse

AppleTell rating of the TOM BIHN Synapse backpack

“The interior is an “ultra-lightweight yet abrasion-resistant Dyneema/nylon rip-stop fabric” made for Tom Bihn in Japan, and I can attest to the the “rip-stop” claim. I jammed the Synapse full of product info, t-shirts, stuffed animals, and a dead zombie hand at E3, and the bag seemed to challenge me to force more in—my back would’ve given out before the bag would.”

Gear Patrol on the Travel Tray

“Tom Bihn spends a lot of time thinking of ways to make travel easier (though he has yet to make plane seats wider). The Seattle-based travel gear/luggage company that bears his name tackles both big and small jobs. One small but vital task that often gets overlooked though is the pesky task of keeping gadgets and goods together during TSA hoedown. The Tom Bihn Travel Tray conquers that task and gets high marks from us for its pure utilitarianism. Toss your keys, wallet and your other EDC items (sans knife) into the Travel Tray and send it on through. Then just pull up the outer flap, cinch the drawstring and away you go.”

KmK: SuperEgoSuperBag, II

“One of the best things is the dedicated space for different kinds of material in the same bag– love the spacious zipper side for clothes, shoes, etc… and the “under-the-flap” for writing/reading materials, snacks, etc. Everything in one bag–SO convenient! All of that, and it looks darn cool to boot. It is my plane carry-on and I have used it several times this month as the main bag for week-long journeys to other locations in Indonesia from my base in Jakarta.”
