“My long awaited new Ristretto finally got delivered 2 weeks ago (it just took a week to get from Seattle to Scotland), and now that I’ve had a chance to put it through it’s paces on a daily basis since then, I thought I’d finally get round to submitting my review. Fair’s fair, I carried out a lot of research on this forum (thanks to others who were kind enough to submit reviews) before deciding on the Ristretto so I guess it’s payback time, and who knows, perhaps I may be able to influence someone else’s research in the future!”
“The Bihn system seemed pretty smartly designed when I first packed the bag, but now at the tail end of my trip, I can say that it’s friggin ingenious! My company’s version of “business travel” is probably one of the more rigorous things one can do with their time. Most weekdays consist of waking up at 6AM, getting dressed, re-packing your suitcase, visiting with customers or co-workers until 6PM or so, then driving or flying to the next city. So, it’s really important to have ever piece of your travel arsenal designed well enough to make packing, retrieval, and, of course, carrying as easy as possible.
Fully loaded, the Smart Alec held all of my workday stuff plus a spare change of clothes in a packing folder (should luggage get lost in transit), and weighed in around 17 pounds. I’m happy to say that I have no back strain or fatigue after carrying it through Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Paris, and Madrid. I highly recommend it!!!”
Our Seattle factory crew has completed the next batch of Ristretto for iPad: all colors, including new color Black/Wasabi, are now in-stock and shipping within one business day.
“Just a post, of which I imagine there are many, as a testament to the exceptional build quality of The Empire Builder.
I purchased mine over 6 years ago for a trip to Hamburg to serve primarily as a briefcase. Since then it has seen daily use in rain/snow/extreme heat. Going in and out of the floorboards and trunks of cars, overhead bins (checked it many times) on planes, boats/ferrys and hotels all over the world. It is now my exclusive goto for 1-2 day trips, holding everything I need for business and wearables. So awesome to travel light.
The Absolute neoprene shoulder strap has been a life saver more times than I could begin to count!!! Standing in the endless line, or running to catch a connecting flight at a gate on the dark side of the moon, the Empire Builder loaded beyond capacity, with even more stuff strapped to the side and somehow i have not once lost the circulation to my arm/shoulder and my shoulder is never jacked at the end of a 12hr travel day.
Another huge plus. My travel related hard drive failures have gone to nil since my laptops been in the Brain Cell.
As dirty as its been, 99% of the time a wipe with a damp cloth and it looks brand new again. Need a tie made of that material.
To date NOTHING, absolutely ZERO anything has failed or fallen apart on this bag. Not even a stitch has frayed.”
The Shop Bag is our take on the reusable shopping bag. It has comfortable PORON® padded handles that won’t cut into your hands or shoulder and will never break down or lose their padding — no matter how many trips you take to the store — and we’ve piped the seams with a stiff plastic material (the material used on hat brims; we cover it with 400 denier pack cloth), which gives the Shop Bag enough body to stand up while you are filling it. You asked for a photo of the two sizes of Shop Bag (Small and Large) side by side: here you go.
Left: Shop Bag, Small, in Steel
Right: Shop Bag, Large, in Ultraviolet
The Shop Bag in both sizes is now available for pre-order in our new Wasabi Dyneema/nylon. We haven’t even made a sample of a Shop Bag in Wasabi to photograph (yet) — in the meantime, here’s a Photoshopped example of what it will look like.

Special thanks to Jeff for sending us this great photo. If you have a photo of your TOM BIHN bag, email it to us — firstname.lastname@example.org — and we’ll feature it on our blog.

Note: we’re low on many sizes and colors of the Travel Stuff Sacks — the first batch will likely sell out. Our Seattle factory will start work on the next batch soon, but if you want a Travel Stuff Sack (or two, three, or four) sooner rather than later, we’d recommend ordering soon.
Thanks to our Seattle factory crew, the Horizontal Brain Cell for the 15″ MacBook Pro Retina and the Vertical Brain Cell for the 15″ MacBook Pro Retina are in stock and ready to ship within one business day.
