New: The Western Flyer (New Front Design, Choose Back Panel)

Tom has updated the design of the Western Flyer to feature the organizational front face of the Tri-Star (with two pockets instead of three) and offer the user the choice of back panel:

  • Backpack Straps: For longer sprints through the airport or across town, the backpack straps (same as those on our Aeronaut and Tri-Star convertible carry-on travel bags) are comfortable and help one carry a heavy load more easily. The padded, contoured shoulder straps feature a removable/adjustable sternum strap and can be tucked away in their own compartment when not in use. With this version of Western Flyer, you also have the option of a removable waist strap.
  • Zip-Open/Shut Pocket for Handle of Rolling Luggage: This design offers two pockets: one for your boarding pass or map and a magazine/newspapers pocket that can zip-open at the bottom creating an open-end pocket that allows you to slip the bag over the handle of your rolling luggage.
  • The Western Flyer is $200 and available for pre-order in colors Indigo/Solar, Steel/Solar, Black/Steel, and Crimson/Steel. Ships by late July.

See us this week in Women’s World Magazine

You’ll find our Aeronaut and Western Flyer featured as two of the best carry-on travel bags in the issue of Women’s World dated May 24th – on newsstands this week. Brad Isbell of One bag, One World (recommending the Western Flyer) and Anne Banas of SmarterTravel.com (recommending the Aeronaut) are interviewed.

Photo: 10+ year old Brain Bag in Uganda

    “Tom and Friends,

Just a note to tell you how pleased I still am after over a decade with
my Big Brain Bag. I just spent two weeks in Uganda and it was with me
daily. My traveling companions inquired about where I got the great bag.

All best wishes to everyone at Tom Bihn.”

“I am VERY happy with the Ristretto bag”

Below is some recent feedback we’ve received via email. Ristretto bag. I am heading out to Europe in a few weeks to do some presentations and the Ristretto is number 1 on my packing list for carrying everything I need for my lectures.
In fact, I teach doctoral classes for an online university and just posted this note about the Ristretto as part of a longer message about traveling, staying in touch, and mobility with netbooks to my students:
    ——
On that note, check out http://www.tombihn.com for the Ristretto for iPads/Netbooks bag. This is a smoking messenger bag and although small and compact, it holds an amazing amount of stuff. I have the extended battery on my mini-10v which works great for those transcontinental flights and it fits perfectly in the foam protected netbook pocket with a bit of room to spare. Totally packed with my netbook, cables, power supply, pens, paper, travel documents, and a raft of other small travel essentials, the Ristretto still comes in under six pounds and fits handily under airplane seats with plenty of foot room leftover. Even though it has a top handle and a nice strap for carrying around, I’d advise you to also put the waist strap on it. I never strap it to my waist unless I am concerned about pickpockets or snatch-and-grab artists while walking around a strange city with it. However, the waist strap is still a very handy feature for attaching it securely to the handle of a carry-on bag, which makes it easier to race through airports chasing those close connections.

Thanks for all of your help, you are certainly an asset to Tom Bihn. “

“I’ve just received my Ristretto and it’s turned out even nicer than I had hoped. This size is perfect for a more streamlined lifestyle and the quality and functionality live up to the ID bag that has served me well for so long. Thank you for the free replacement for my clasp on my ID bag. Given it’s recent washing and the new clasp, the bag looks like it did the day I received it. Thanks for the great products.”

“i’ve had my super ego for 2 weeks and i have yet to think of anything that i’d change. very well thought through. thank you so much”

Co-Pilot Design Update: Pocket for Rolling Luggage Handle

Tom has updated the design of the Co-Pilot, a new personal carry-on sized travel bag made available for pre-order last month and scheduled to ship in June. The back pocket of the Co-Pilot now features a zip-open (and shut) pocket designed to allow you to slip the bag over the handle of rolling luggage, as seen in the photo below. When not being used in that way, the pocket can be zipped shut for magazines, newspapers, maps, etc. The interior of this pocket is lined with our Dyneema/nylon rip-stop fabric. All Co-Pilots – even those pre-ordered on the very first day – will have the new pocket for rolling luggage handles.

The below photos were shot today in our Seattle factory, using Chris and Jolie Guillebeau’s rolling luggage. (Chris also carries an Empire Builder, which makes perfect sense.)
