Introducing the Little Swift

The Little Swift is a smaller version of our Swift and Swift in Cork tote/shoulder bags. Originally designed for
knitters and crafty types, The Swift was designed by Tom in collaboration with the readers of
Knitty® magazine.
Since its debut, the Swift has become popular among knitters and non-knitters alike
seeking a uniquely styled tote/shoulder bag. Tom noticed that many of the women who work
at TOM BIHN and carry Swifts didn’t always need a bag as large as the Swift. On some days,
a smaller version would work better. And the Little Swift was born.

Our Seattle Factory Showroom is open today from 12pm – 4pm. See you there!

All About Cork (Why We Use It, Video, After Five Years of Use)

Our Cork fabric – used in the The Swift in
    Cork
, the Swiftette in Cork and Clear Organizer Wallet in Cork (both debuting Monday), Cork Sleeve for
    Amazon Kindle
, Cork Organizer Pouches, and the Imago – has become
    one of our favorite materials.

First and foremost, visually and texturally it’s a stunning material. Our Cork
fabric is made from real cork wood from trees grown in Portugal. Every
inch of Cork fabric is completely unique due to the natural variances in
the cork wood from which it is made, ensuring no two TOM BIHN bags in Cork are alike.
Each varying pattern tells a little of the story of the tree from which it came.

Cork fabric comes from cork wood grown in forests in Portugal like this<br />

Cork fabric is strong, durable, and naturally
water/pet hair/stain resistant. You might first think of wine bottle corks – though both are produced from the same trees, our cork fabric is much different. It has a supple hand similar to leather.
We’ve subjected our Cork fabric to our own creative tests (such as
strapping it to a bicycle for two months of winter commuting)
as have customers ( href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34707625@N04/4153664256/">see ex
machina’s video demonstrating the flexibility of cork here). The
verdict? Other than a natural darkening of the cork material over time,
it’s tough stuff – stronger than some of the synthetic materials that other
manufacturers use, though not quite as strong as our 1000d Cordura or
    1050d ballistic nylon.

    href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cork_Oak">Bark is harvested from cork
trees (Quercus suber) every nine to twelve years – without
killing or harming the tree. Planted in 1783, oldest – and most
productive – cork tree in the world is known as the href="http://www.corkfacts.com/nchoice3.htm">Whistler Tree because
it serves as a home for many songbirds. Cork is recyclable,
biodegradable and renewable. Cork forests in Portugal provide habitat
for a wide variety of birds and animals, including the Iberian Lynx, the
most critically threatened feline in the world. ( href="http://www.tombihn.com/blog/node/1168">The fad in recent times of
wine makers replacing corks with screw-top caps has threatened the cork
forests – and the animals who make those forests their homes by
potentially forcing the cork farmers to replace their cork forests with
fast-growing eucalyptus or neglect them entirely.) Pretty much every
part of a cork tree is eventually put to good use, including its acorns
and leaves. It’s good for people, too: href="http://www.eurostrategies.talktalk.net/cif/news.htm">the cork
industry in Portugal employes about 14,000 people.

    Of
course, the true test of our Cork fabric is time. Below is a photo of a
Archetype in Cork (a bag we no longer make) prototype that has been used
daily for the past five years. You’ll notice the slight darkening
natural to the cork fabric. Other than that, it shows little signs of
    wear.

National Parks Traveler Review of the Synapse and Aeronaut

TOM BIHN Synapse and Aeronaut reviewed by National Parks Traveler
    Excerpt:

“Now, I must admit that when I first looked at the Aeronaut it appeared to be too small and too compartmentalized to suit my needs or tastes. I’ve long used a voluminous duffel bag for travels, and my backpack is a top-loader. Why would I want a piece of luggage with three well-defined compartments that in turn can swallow a variety of “Packing Cubes,” as this Seattle-based manufacturer dubs them?

Obviously, I didn’t realize the structure that was lacking from my life.

When I started packing for my recent trip to Saguaro National Park, I quickly came to appreciate this 2,700-cubic-inch bag. For starters, I could slip a pair of size 11 lightweight hiking shoes into one of the end compartments. By putting the shoes into a Packing Cube designed for the pocket, I could contain any dust or dirt inside the washable cube, not inside the end compartment. The other end pocket was big enough for underwear and socks for the five-day trek, while the main compartment gobbled up a pair of hiking pants, seven shirts, and toiletries. And there was some room left over, too, to handle at least another pair of pants or rain gear if need be.”

I used my Empire Builder for a 4 day/3 night business trip last week. Dress was business casual. It worked out well, since my transportation was mostly all Air & Train (MARTA). Here’s the list:

    Main Pocket:
15″ Eagle Creek Packit Folder containing:

  • 3 polo shirts
  • 1 pair of slacks wrapped around it (to minimize wrinkles)
  • Tom Bihn Aeronaut large packing cube containing:

  • 3 pair underwear
  • 3 pair socks
  • 1 pair shorts
  • 1 t-shirt
  • 1 pair flip-flops
  • 2 packs microwave popcorn
  • Eagle Creek pack-it half tube cube containing:

  • spare eyeglasses in a case
  • Macbook charger in a pocket
  • iPhone charger
  • short extension cord
  • 1 razor
  • 1 toothbrush
  • 1 comb
  • Outside Flap
    Horizontal Pocket
    3-1-1 Ziploc bag, containing:

  • Toothpaste
  • Dandruff shampoo
  • Hand sanitizer (small tube)
  • Shaving cream
  • Vertical Pocket

  • First Aid kit
  • Under the Outside Flap
The Long Zippered Pocket contained various papers, and, the training manual I got at my destination.

    The Large Pouch contained:

  • Macbook Air in a padded case.
  • Fiber One bars in a pocket
  • my keychain on the key strap
  • The back “pocket” contained a day bag from a conference I went to years ago (it folds up small, is very light & thin).

All in all this worked out well, everything fit perfectly.

“I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the Checkpoint Flyer over the last 6 months of weekly air travel. After traveling weekly for over 12 years, this was finally the “perfect” laptop bag. My ex-boyfriend gave it to me for my birthday, and I touted its merits to everyone who noticed it at work and at the airport. Truly an A+ product.” - C.

“Wooo hoo! I had a Tom Bihn laptop bag for my MacBook G3 Pismo YEARS ago and it lasted for years and years, until the cat did a lot of damage. Once I saw the iPad and your announcement, I was excited to have a reason to give you guys my money! :-) Hope the products are just as fantastic as back then.” - C.

“Hi Guys, got my Empire Builder, it is perfect. Love the Zephyr for daily stuff, but the EB for travel, you guys rock on the quality and service front.” - A.
