Shiva: Adventures in visiting the store!

Note: Our Seattle store is closed until late April/early May.

“Anyway, I was in Seattle for a conference, and a visit to the Tom Bihn store was high on my must-dos. I called and they said they would be open Mondays. My friend and I walked down all the way on First Avenue from the Convention Center–downtown; a good hour long walk. It was a great day for a walk in Seattle, and I got to see the city in ways that you don’t when you drive around.

When we arrived at the store, it was closed. There was a note that said the store would not be open cos of the weather. I was so disappointed that I was willing to cry; and trust me, I am not even young!!! I went to Outdoor Research, and they were truly helpful and gave me a number for June who works at TB.

And wonder of wonders, June said she was up at the factory, and she brought us up on the elevator; and for the next hour, she left us to our devices in the store….I was completely taken aback. The place was completely clean, clear, uncluttered; and the folks acted like I was just visiting their home. No one hovered around; or watched; or sold me anything. They just let me explore. I walked around the factory—and watched the bags being made.”

Suggestions for Russell in Miami?

Russell posted in the Travel Tips section of the TOM BIHN Forums:
“I’ll be headed down to Miami this weekend for the Ultra Music Festival.
Wondered if anyone on the board had any tips for Miami or Ultra if you have been or are going?

Got my flights and hotel setup, staying near the airport, and I’ll be packing my Tom Bihn Western Flyer, leaving the MacBook and Brain Cell behind as this is a vacation trip (no work allowed!)”

Do you have any suggestions for Russell? If so, post them here.

Vote for your favorite new Swift color

We’ve added two new 1000d Cordura colors to our palette – Punch and Sand. Pictures of Punch can be seen here. No pictures of Sand are available – yet. Imagine a cool, neutral beige color that we think pairs well with Olive. Both of these colors will be used in the next run of the Swift. We’ve created a poll in the TOM BIHN Forums that allows you to vote for your two favorite Swift color combinations using Punch or Sand. No guarantee that we will make the winning colors (Tom’s the final color judge) but it will definitely help their cause.

In stock: Brain Bag in Black, Steel, Sapphire, Olive…

The Brain Bag backpack is now in-stock in all colors except for Punch, which is available for pre-order and ships by late April.

bbum’s weblog-o-mat: Tom Bihn’s Bags & Customer Service

Practical Hacks Reviews TOM BIHN Bags

“Nearly 7 years ago and after spending years searching, I finally decided upon a backpack and computer bag. Specifically, I picked up a Brain Bag backpack from Tom Bihn along with a Brain Cell for my computer that snaps into the Brain Bag.

Best. Bag. Ever. Beyond being well made, the design focuses on usability. All pockets are easily accessible, secure, and the zippers are all stitched such that your stuff stays dry even in heavy rains.

After 7 years of medium to heavy use my only complaint is that the damned thing still looks new! Not even a stressed seam, much less a hole, rip, tear, or other defect. I’m only complaining because I have no reason to buy a new bag from Tom Bihn but, damnit, the new designs are cool!

Beyond making great bags, Bihn’s customer service can’t be beat. Twice, I have “lost” 1/2 of the buckle for the waist strap on my brain bag (”lost” as in “n year old slides it off and hides it somewhere, never to be found”).” Wondering what happened next? Read bbum’s blog to find out.

Practical Hacks: Western Flyer Review

Practical Hacks Reviews TOM BIHN Bags

Excerpt:
“Speaking of which, in a recent conversation with the Tom Bihn, he pointed out that the 1050 ballistic fabric used on the Western Flyer is a smooth finish nylon which means the bag will slide more easily when you’re retrieving it from beneath the seat or from an overhead compartment than would be the case with 1000 denier Cordura. In addition, lab testing has shown the 1050 ballistic nylon that’s used in the Western Flyer and other Tom Bihn bags is twice as abrasion resistant as the 1680 ballistic that’s used in many competitive bags. And when you think about it, abrasion is the ultimate enemy of bags like this, as they’re constantly shoved into and out of trunks and storage & overhead compartments. This bag’s clearly up to the test.” Read the full review @ Pratical Hacks

Seattle Store Closed Until Late April/Early May

Our Seattle Factory Showroom/Store is located on the second floor of a seven story building. Unfortunately, our passenger elevator (the only publicly accessible way of reaching our floor) will be out of service for at least a month for repairs. This means the store will be closed until late April or early May.

If you are traveling to Seattle from out of town and would like to visit the store during that time, please call us at 1-800-729-9607. We may be able to arrange a special visit to the store.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope to be open again by late April or early May. We will post an update on the store as soon as we have news.
