My Other Car is a TOM BIHN Bag sticker: Tom waxes profound

My other car is my TOM BIHN Bag
“It occurred to me recently that, for many people who commute everyday
to work or school, their bag is in many ways like a car: not only does
it go everywhere with you, it carries/organizes your stuff, it becomes
your home-away-from-home, and maybe even reflects who you are. Is your
bag an SUV or a sports car? A hybrid or a minivan?”

The next step in Tom’s thought process led to this tongue-in-check
sticker for your other, “other” car. It’s styled after the oval,
European country stickers, with stylized “TB”, and is printed black on
white, outdoor-grade plastic.

$2, includes postage if ordered by itself. Buy here.

(Don’t forget to send us a picture of how you use the sticker!)

Introducing the Shop Bag ultra-lightweight reusable grocery bag

Tom Bihn Shop Bag ultra-lightweight reusable grocery bag

What you’ll notice first is that the Shop Bag has comfortable,
Poron-padded handles that will never break down or lose their padding
- no matter how many trips you take to the store. These padded handles
prevent that awful hand-slicing experience of the traditional non-padded
fabric handles, and they’re also extra comfortable on your shoulder (the
handles have been designed to be an ideal length that will allow most
folks to wear the bag over their shoulder or carry it in their hand.)

The Shop Bag is more than sturdy enough to hold lots of groceries (including
heavy items such as canned goods, beer, and wine) but the bag itself
is very lightweight – only 5.1oz – because it is made out of our
Dyneema/nylon fabric. Because the Dyneema fabric lacks the stiffness of
our other heavier-weight fabrics, we’ve piped the seams with a stiff
plastic material (the material that is used on hat brims; we cover it
with 400 denier pack cloth), which gives the Shop Bag enough body to
stand up while you are filling it. The structure that the piping gives
the Shop Bag also keeps the bag looking smart.

The inside of the Shop Bag has two deep, open-top pockets designed for
items like wine or water bottles. The pockets are contoured and pleated
so that they have volume enough for even a 24 fl oz mineral water bottle,
and also so that, if you want to carry the Shop Bag inside your larger bag
and conserve space, you can fold the Shop Bag itself into one of these
open-top pockets, reducing the overall size of the bag to about 8 x 7 x 1″.

The Shop Bag is available for pre-order now and ships by early December.
$30. Available in Solar/White or Steel/White.

Tom Bihn Volume Comparison Spreadsheet by thax

“I have knocked together an Excel and Open Office spreadsheet of all the TB bags I could find. I was looking at all the questions about size and volume, so this should make it easier to sort and find out what bag is best for you (or all of them).
Take a look and post anything you would like to add and change, thanks.” – posted by thax in the TOM BIHN Forums.

GottaBeMobile: The Tom Bihn Checkpoint Flyer Arrives

GottaBeMobile review of the Checkpoint Flyer

“One of those new Checkpoint friendly bags is Tom Bihn’s Checkpoint Flyer, which I’ll be reviewing over the next week. My initial impressions: top-knotch quality, roomy, and light. I just showed off the bag to a colleague of mine that travels a great deal and you should have seen her eyes light up. She wants one bad!”

First Market Bag Review: “Honestly, I love this bag.”

Note: The Market Bag will be available for pre-order next week. Our Seattle factory is currently constructing the first run of bags. TOM BIHN Forum members who were the first to request to receive a sample Market Bag for evaluation will have their samples shipped this Friday.

“I love this tote bag. It squishes up so nice and is the perfect size for carrying as an extra bag for that stuff you may not need all day. I needed something smaller than the Lux for lugging fewer items to and from work, and this bag fit the bill perfectly.

For example, it’s good to carry things you want to take to work or a friend’s house and then leave there. Once you dump the stuff at your office, fold up the bag and stuff it into your cafe bag.

It’s also excellent for impromptu shopping of any form – groceries, art supplies, clothes, books, anything. Just pull it out of your day bag and there you go.

Honestly, I love this bag.”

Now Shipping: Small Cafe Bag in Olive/Cayenne, Storm/Sapphire

The Small Cafe Bag is now shipping in Olive/Cayenne and new color combination Storm/Sapphire – in addition to 8+ other colors.

The TOM BIHN Small Cafe Bag now Storm/Sapphire, Olive/Cayenne

“The Café Bag reminds me of the old poacher/hunter/general purpose bags some ages ago. Easy and simple access, extra pockets to put small items in, comfortable sling to carry the bag, just the right thing. Enough room for a small camera, cellular phone, umbrella, water bottle and many more “survival” items for the BIG city. Order and delivery was fast. Normally it can take some time for things to cross the Atlantic from the USA to Europe. Of course the costs are somewhat higher, but the quality and the design is hard to find over here in Europe.”

Aeronaut and Ruck’s Sac in India

maverick writes:

“i ended up carrying the aeronaut and ruck’s sac on my trip to india, and this worked out quite well. the ruck’s sac only came along as a last minute decision was made for me to carry my macbook inside a soft cell inside the ruck’s sac. but i’m glad i brought it because i packed everything i needed in-flight and in-train in the ruck’s sac and left the rest of the stuff in the aeronaut (even though i didn’t check in the aeronaut).

i also carried my liquids and other bathroom items inside of a clear quarter packing cube, and i was able to put this through the security screenings at washington dulles, and paris charles de gaulle airport without needing to move the liquids into a separate ziplock bag.

inside the aeronaut was a packing cube backpack. this worked out really well, because i did a little shopping while i was in india :) . so i checked in the aeronaut on my way back, and i carried the packing cube backpack and the ruck’s sac as my carry-on’s.”

Clear Quarter Packing Cube Discussion on the Forums

backpack writes..

“I looooove my Clear Quarter Packing Cube. it travels with Large Cafe Bag(s) at all time (it has also caught the eyes of the TSA ladies).”

moriond replied…

“I use the clear quarter cubes for electronics and laptop hard drives and cables. You can nicely fit two such hard drives in enclosures in one side of the clear quarter cubes, and having the thicker clear urethane offers more protection as well as letting the TSA folks see the contents. The clear quarter cube travels in my personal carryon, while the other packing cubes go in my Aeronaut.”
