“The Smart Alec [backpack] saved my back.”

“The Smart Alec saved my back. In general, I find that if I’ve got room in the bag, I’ll fill it.

That’s why I like the SA. It fits my macbook pro 15″ the ac adapter, a portable hard drive and some odd cables in the snake charmer. It leaves me with enough room for a hardcover book or a snack or a light fleece, depending on the trip.

What else do I really need?
The loaded SA weighs about half as much as my old ibook/Targus setup.
I’m very happy with it, especially the protection from the brain cell.” – posted by avincent52 in the TOM BIHN Forums.

The New Apple 15″ MacBook Pro and 13″ MacBook

Apple today introduced updated versions of their 15.4″ MacBook Pro, 17″ MacBook Pro, and 13″ MacBook Pro.

Both the 15.4″ MacBook Pro and 13″ MacBook received minor chassis sizing changes. Many of you have been calling or emailing to ask when new sizes of our Brain Cell laptop case or Checkpoint Flyer laptop insert will be available for these laptops: the good news is that it appears (as of now) that our current sizes for those laptops – Size 4X for the 15.4″ MacBook Pro and Size 6 for the 13″ MacBook – will also fit the new versions. We will be confirming this tomorrow evening and will update you then with the latest news.

If you are in the Seattle area and plan to buy one of the new Apple laptops, please email us at seattle@tombihn.com. In exchange for visiting our Seattle factory/showroom and giving us a peak at your new laptop, we’ll give you the grand tour! We’d be in the market for new Apple laptops ourselves if we hadn’t just purchased a new 13″ MacBook and 15.4″ MacBook Pro this summer.

Ouch: Torn knees and hands (but the laptop in the Brain Cell was saved)

“Last Thursday I was biking home from one of my law school classes with my Super Ego bag slung over my back using a Q-AM Shoulder Strap and my 15″ laptop in a Brain Cell inside the bag. I like to try and go as fast as possible down a steep hill on campus. I’ve hit 35 mph before, but this past Thursday only got to 34.3 (weak).

Anyway, there is a sharp curve at the bottom of the hill and as I tried to make the turn, my bike slipped out from under me. I was thrown off the bike, launched over the curb, slid across the sidewalk, and I stopped when I hit a fence along the side of the road. My hands are all torn apart and my knees look pretty nasty – luckily I had no broken bones.

I’m writing you to tell you that my bag is almost completely in tact, and my computer still looks great and works perfectly. My Q-AM shoulder strap is dirty and ripped, but the bag lasted through impact and through the fall. I guess it is true that you get what you pay for…your bags are excellent and worth every penny. In fact, if I had another bag on my back, I’d likely be paying much more to fix/replace my computer. Thanks so much for making excellent bags, I will be sure to continue to refer all of my friends to Tom Bihn and OF COURSE I’ll come to you first when I need any bag.” – S.L.

Gadling.com Review: Tom Bihn Checkpoint Flyer TSA friendly laptop bag

Below: excerpts of the Gadling.com review by Scott Carmichael “Tom Bihn Checkpoint Flyer TSA friendly laptop bag”:

“As I mentioned earlier, the quality of the bag is simply amazing. I always considered myself a bit of a laptop bag “snob”, and have regularly purchased expensive bags to protect my goodies, but none of them are as well designed and well made as the Checkpoint Flyer. All the zippers on the top are splashproof thanks to special YKK zippers. The material feels bulletproof and I absolutely adore the color combination (I have the crimson/black version).”

“Of course, the real test happens at the airport, and I am happy to report that things actually went smooth; on a flight from Chicago to Amsterdam the bag unfolded and went through the X-Ray machine without any TSA agents yelling and screaming. And to be honest, it wasn’t the bag I was fearing, it was lack of training of the TSA agents. Thankfully most of them seem to have received the memo, and the bag was able to pass security without running the risk of losing a laptop. Unfortunately, the airport sterile zone is not the kind of place where you can pull out your camera and photograph what is happening, so you’ll have to settle for some photos made on my patio.”

eWEEK Apple Watch: Tom Bihn Ristretto: Lighter Than Air

eWEEK Apple Watch Joe Wilcox Reviews the TOM BIHN Ristretto MacBook Air Bag

“At a time when Americans worry about the economy or jobs moving overseas, Ristretto and its sibling products are refreshing reminders that innovation and manufacturing still thrive on these shores. Tom designs the bags, which are produced at a factory in Seattle.

There’s a European feel to Ristretto’s design. I vacillate from understanding my wife’s experience carrying a purse to feeling like I’m boarding the Eurail for the Netherlands. There’s something not American about this very American-made bag. The Ristretto’s vertical design, over-the-shoulder strap and asymmetrical flap contribute to the distinctive appearance, which wonderfully complements MacBook Air’s subtle contours.” – Read the full review by Joe Wilcox of eWEEK’s Apple Watch.
