New Seattle Factory Showroom: Now open!

    Seattle Factory Showroom

Our Seattle factory showroom, which features the full line of TOM BIHN bags and a selection of Trager products, has moved from its Pioneer Square location to our new Seattle headquarters, located in the South Downtown district of Seattle at 2203 1st. Avenue S., Suite #200.

If you are in Seattle, a visit to our factory showroom is a must. You’ll be able to experience and purchase in-person the bags available on our Web site (and don’t forget to check out our way cool Marmoleum floor.) As the showroom is right down the hall from our production facility, you may even be able to sneak a peak at the bags being made. The connection between buying a product and knowing where it comes from and who the craftspeople are who made it is often lost in today’s world. One reason we decided to move our Seattle retail store is because we want that connection to be one our customers and employees can experience.

Seattle residents also have the option of placing an order through our Web
site and picking it up at the factory showroom store to save on shipping costs.

Hours, contact info, and directions are after the break.

Size 4X Brain Cell for the 15.4″ MacBook Pro Delayed

Back in September 1999, NASA lost the $94 million Mars Climate Orbiter due to an internal communications error regarding metric vs. standard
    measurements.

What does this have to do with Tom Bihn and the Size 4X Brain Cell?

The good news: We are in good company with NASA.

The bad news: Due to a small miscommunication within our design team, the first production run of our new Brain Cell Size 4X (specifically designed for the new 15.4″ MacBook Pro) was produced 15mm (about 5/8″) too short (too shallow) to fit the MacBook Pro 15.4″.

The correctly sized version of the Brain Cell 4X will be ship in mid-to-late March. Orders placed now for the Size 4X Brain Cell will be orders for the correct size and will ship in mid-to-late March.

Customers who have already received the Size 4X Brain Cell, or who have already placed orders for it, have received an email with further instructions, apologies, and solutions. If you are a Size 4X Brain Cell customer and you did not receive that email, please email us at inquiries@tombihn.com or call us at 1-800-729-9607.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The Size 4X Monolith, which is perfectly sized for the 15.4″ MacBook Pro, will ship on March 7th. The Size 4X Soft Cell will ship late March.

In Stock: Size 2XL Soft Cell and Size 2 Monolith

    The Monolith and Soft Cell

The Size 2XL Soft Cell, available in Black, is now in-stock and ready to ship. Designed to protect your laptop against scrapes and scratches, the Soft Cell has an exterior made of durable 500 Denier Cordura and an interior of super-soft brushed nylon. The Soft Cell protects your laptop with little bulk added and is ideal for those who don’t want their laptop case to make their loads heavier or take up a lot of space. The Size 2XL Soft Cell fits best inside our Brain Bag and Smart Alec backpacks, but it will probably fit in your current backpack as well.

Also in stock and ready to ship is the Size 2 Monolith. The Monolith is available in colors Black, Steel, Crimson, Deep Blue, and Wasabi.
In the Monolith, your laptop hangs suspended, cradled in 8mm thick soft foam padding in a 4mm hard corrugated plastic insert that protects from the front, back, and bottom. The sides are protected by dense cross-linked closed-cell polyethylene foam. This offers the toughest protection you can get for your laptop in a case that is still light and minimalist. The Monolith is specifically designed to clip inside our Brain Bag and Smart Alec backpacks, but it will probably fit in your current backpack, too.

Sarah Andrews takes her Brain Bag backpack to Antarctica

Customer Sarah Andrews recently went on an expedition to Antarctica and sent us some stunning pictures of her Brain Bag in use during her trip.

    Sarah Andrews Brain Bag
Sarah is a celebrated mystery novelist. The short version of Sarah’s biography is: “Sarah Andrews is a geologist who writes mystery novels about a geologist.” Among the novels Sarah has written are Earth Colors, Killer Dust, and Fault Line.
Sarah even sent us an autographed copy of her book Bone Hunter. (All of Sarah’s books are available at Powells.)

More pictures and stories of Sarah’s travels (what did she think of the Brain Bag, anyway?) after the break….

You can read Sarah’s illustrated Antarctic journey reports on her Web site.

Below is what Sarah wrote to us about using her Brain Bag in Antarctica:

I am returned from Antarctica and getting things sorted out here. One thing that didn’t need to get sorted was the marvelous computer backpack you provided for the trip. My other luggage fell to pieces, but not so the Brain Bag with Brain Cell. The Snake Charmer kept me from getting tangled like nothing else ever has, and it was incredible how much it held.

We’ve received pictures from customers who’ve used their Brain Bag backpack in travels to countries such as Iraq, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Afghanistan, and Tanzania. Send us your pictures and we’ll post them on the blog, too!

Washington Post article: Burdens of the Modern Beast

A TB customer -- with his Empire Builder and stuff
In the article “Burdens of the Modern Beast”, Washington Post staff writer Linton Weeks makes an interesting observation — we carry a TON of stuff. A lot more than we have in the past. The article notes that many people carry more than one bag at a time.

Some customers have sent us pictures of what they can fit inside their Tom Bihn bags. Check out this picture. The picture posted in this entry is of a customer holding his Empire Builder, and before him is everything he fits in the Empire Builder.

We’re curious. What do you carry with you every day? What can’t you live without? Tell us — in our forums.

I think my favorite part of the article is the writers description of school children with rolling suitcases — “They look like so many little flight attendants.”

Back In Stock: The Size 4 Brain Cell

The Size 4 Brain Cell is now in-stock in all colors: Black, Steel, Crimson, Deep Blue and Wasabi.

The Brain Cell takes laptop protection a step further. Cradled in 8mm thick soft foam padding, your laptop hangs suspended in a 4mm hard corrugated plastic insert that protects from the front, back, and bottom. The sides are protected by dense cross-linked closed-cell polyethylene foam. This offers the toughest protection you can get for your laptop in a case that is still light and minimalist.

    The forums are back up!

As you may have noticed, our forums were briefly down today. The cause was a minor glitch that is now fixed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you didn’t notice, maybe you’re not yet one of our forum members (or lurkers), which means you’re missing out! Our forums are a great place to ask questions about our bags, suggest improvements to our Web site, or just let us how much you love your TOM BIHN bags. The best part about the forums is that while you’re likely to get a reply from someone who works at TOM BIHN, you’ll also get replies from other customers. Searching the forums is also a great way to find an answer to a question you have.
