The people of the Gulf Coast need our help

The people in Mississippi and Louisiana affected by Hurricane Katrina need
our help. The damage caused by Hurricane Katrina has created a major disaster
for those living in and around these areas, whether they were able to evacuate
or stayed behind.

We will be making donations to the Red Cross and the Humane Society.

The Red Cross

As always, the Red Cross can be relied upon to provide immediate and
emergency relief to people affected by disaster and long-term aid to help
them rebuild their lives. This amazing organization continues to need our
donations.

The Humane Society

The Humane Society is mobilizing an immediate response to help people,
their pets, and livestock during this disaster. Dogs and cats aren’t the only
animals affected. Horses, cows, pigs, chickens and other animals that people
depend on to make a living are in need of rescue and help. Animals in zoos
and aquariums could also be in danger.

Both organizations are asking for emergency donations.

Sparky of Gearlive reviews the Monolith and Brain Bag

On the Monolith:

“It was easy to give the Monolith high ranks. Between
the friendly customer service at the Tom Bihn store in Seattle, the
solid and well thought out construction made of durable materials, and
the sense of security that I got using it I am a very happy reviewer.
The Monolith would have gotten a 10/10 like its cousin the Brain Cell if
not for the lack of a pocket. Gear Live highly recommends this unique
laptop carrier.”

On the Brain Bag:

“10/10. The Brain Bag is a well thought out bag aimed at the highly
active Gear Live reader. If you are looking for a small bag to carry a
laptop around this is overkill (and you should look at some of the
excellent smaller bags Tom Bihn has to offer), but if like me, you carry
lots of stuff with you in your day-to-day life and don’t want to be
stuck with a gym bag, laptop bag, messenger bag with you and want to
consolidate, then the Brain Bag is for you. This bag features some of
the most durable construction and well thought out design that we have
ever seen.”

Our new Canon 20D

Thanks to reader/customer Brian Short (check out Brian’s photography)
and Tom’s brother Dan for recommending the 20D.
We bought one about a week and a half ago at Glazer’s Camera in Seattle.
It’s an amazing camera. Below are a few pictures I took with the 20D.
Why the kitten pictures? I just fostered a litter of five kittens and
their mother who were abandoned in the Port Angeles Wal-Mart parking lot.
They make a great subject — who doesn’t love pictures of kittens?
More pictures of everything from bags to employees to Port Angeles style
coming soon.

Introducing the LUX

LUX width="68" height="104" />The
LUX is as you like it: a sophisticated tote, an elegant laptop
carrier, or a chic diaper bag.

A customizable bag with optional zip-in inserts, the LUX is a tote bag
with graceful curves and streamlined design. There are no outside pockets or
zippers to distract from its clean lines. The padded handles are easy on
the hands, and the straps are the right length to ride comfortably on
the shoulder. A zippered inside pocket is sized to fit wallet,
checkbook, and/or iPod, and has two points to attach a key snap
(included). The inside bottom of the LUX features a separating zipper
that allows you to zip in one of our still-in-development optional
inserts to customize the function of the LUX to suit your needs. Of
course, without any insert, the LUX is still an easy-on-the-eyes and
ever-so-useful bag for town and market. The LUX is $50.00 and is available
for pre-order now with a ship date of late September. Inserts for the LUX
will be available in late September.

Planned inserts include:

The Parental Unit:
A diaper bag insert designed and tested by parents.
No bunnies or teddy bears, just clean lines, tough materials and
thoughtful features.

Laptop insert:
A padded insert for your 12 laptop, as well as
accessories, a few files, and maybe even lunch.

Knitting insert:
When we decided to make a knitting insert for the LUX,
we turned to our friends at Knitty Magazine for their input,
and that’s how the the Knitty/Tom Bihn contest came to be.
Visit Knitty.com to fill out the survey on the LUX knitting bag insert.
Should it have three pockets or five? What colors would you like to see
it in? You tell us through the survey and we’ll make the knitting bag
of your dreams. When you fill out and submit the survey, you’ll be
entered in the contest.

The Grand Prize (1) is 1 LUX tote with knitting insert and a $100 TOM
BIHN gift certificate. (Approximate value of prize is $200.00). 2nd and

Sunga recommends: BalanceBall Chair

Happy Bouncing!Do
you remember the Hippity Hop jumping ball you had when you were a
kid? You know, the round rubber ball with a handle on top that you could
bounce all over the yard? Well the fun is not over just because you’re
all grown up and you sit in front of a computer all day long.

The BalanceBall Chair by Gaiam is like a grown up version of the old Hippity Hop.
Sort of. Okay, I don’t get to go bouncing all over the office in it and it doesn’t
have a handle, but it sure does turn heads. Not a day goes by that a customer doesn’t
notice it and say something like “Wow, I’ve never seen a chair like that.”
And I suspect that my co-workers steal it away from my desk when I’m on vacation.
It is essentially a Balance Ball in a wheeled chair base.
You’ve probably heard that sitting on a Balance Ball instead of a chair is good for
your back and hips and all-over alignment.

Ever tried that? It’s hard! You have to balance it all day. That’s why it’s called
a Balance Ball. The BalanceBall Chair is basically the a wimpy variation.
You get a lot of those same benefits without having to keep the ball balanced.

When I first got my chair I could really feel my lower back starting to
get stronger. In other words, it ached. Now it is totally natural for me
to sit in this chair every day, and it is sooo comfortable. The chair
comes with a desktop exercise book that you can set on your desk and
look at every day. Some more ambitious folks might even do some of the
exercises. The chair is made by a cool company called Gaiam and is sold on their website
as well as some other online dealers such as Drugstore.com.

Happy Bouncing!

About Sunga

Customer raves about her Smart Alec

The Smart Alec likes you, too“Last
year, I bought the first-edition Smart Alec
after getting tired of breaking every backpack I could get my hands on during my senior year
of high school. I had been not only weary about the price, but about the
need for space. I was working on a thesis project and was required to
carry up to twenty books plus a 17" Powerbook (that was
of my own doing) back and forth across long stretches of hallway and
classroom. The Smart Alec was not only able to carry all of these
together, but restored my faith in backpack-kind! After the first few
days, I felt relieved that the lack of pockets and doo-dads I’d never
needed before had meant that someone made durable fabric and great zippers.

“It was worth every penny. All one thousand of them. And the three months
I had to wait for it. This bag puts L.L. Bean, Eddie Bauer, Orvis, and
Jansport’s sheet-thin construction to shame. The zippers have yet to
jam, teddy grahams and other intellectual snack foods have yet to get
jammed into the seams to the point of no return, I have yet to lose my
calculator and I think I’m never going to buy another messenger bag or
backpack from another company again if I get another complement on the
asthetic appeal of your product.

“Thank you, Bihn Squad, for giving me a bag I’ll be more than happy to
take to college with me. May all the luck in the world be with you.”

— L.I.M.B.

Two new products: The Laptop Keyboard Cover and Accessory Pouches

Laptop Keyboard CoverThe
TOM BIHN Laptop Keyboard Cover is a thin piece of Ultrasuede® that
you sandwich between the keyboard and the screen of your laptop when you
fold it shut. Ultrasuede® is a high-tech synthetic suede material that
feels like chamois; it pads the laptop screen from the keyboard when the
laptop is closed (especially useful when transporting your laptop) as
well as absorbing dirt and oil that your fingers leave behind on the keys.

It fits most laptops and is available in four colors: Graphite (dark
gray), Kiwi (vibrant yellow-green), Wild-Caught Salmon (light orange-pink), and Cobalt (medium blue).

Lightly and tastefully embossed with the TOM BIHN and Ultrasuede® logos. Available for $6.00
including shipping.

Laptop Keyboard Cover

Accessory PouchesThese
simple pouches will add an extra pocket for organization to any bag.
Using a small-but-tough plastic snaphook, they attach inside the
TOM BIHN Buzz, Smart Alec, ID, LUX, Empire Builder, and all sizes of the
Cafe bags, which have D rings for a key snap inside (if you have some
other bag, that’s OK too: just don’t use the little plastic snaphook or break it off.)

Available in Small ($5.00) and Medium ($7.00) sizes. The small fits
items such as wallets, keys, or makeup, and the medium will fit a
checkbook, mouse, or pens. Available in various colors.

SchwarzTech reviews the Brain Bag

“Overall, the Brain Bag was a very impressive piece of luggage.
Despite its large size, it didn’t feel bulky or uncomfortable in the least bit.
The best part, besides the reliability and high-quality construction is
that it gives you the abilities to mix and match what accessories you
want for the inner compartments, making it a truly personalized product.
Although the price might steer some away, you do get what you pay for.”
